Should what specialty you want to pursue affect your med school list?
I was wondering should what specialty you want to pursue affect the medical schools you apply to, and if it should, what information should I find out about each school to help make this decision. I know that what specialty you want to pursue has a high likelihood of changing while you are in school, but I am very interested in neurosurgery and with it being a specialty with such few positions I want to give myself the best chances to match when the time comes. Thanks in advanced for the help! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Psychiatry vs Neurosurgery
Was anyone else ever making this decision? I do realize they are basically the polar opposite of specialties. What drew you one direction over the other? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

My surgery eval might be pretty bad, and it ’s obviously my fault. How much will this hurt me?
I’m thinking of IM vs Neuro vs Anes vs FM… I’ll do more electives and some sub-Is next year to figure it out. TL;DR—fellow and resident set no expectations (literally said “I have no expectations”), I scrub in two days a week for the cases of the day, I don’t present patients on rounds, and I don’t stay long hours at night or come in on weekends. The other medical student does. I’m worried my eval will be bad, and I’m getting no guidance but I also don’t want to stay past 6 and come in on... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

The only thing that matters for surgery
(General, ortho, vascular, neuro etc) So this is what my mentor told me. The only thing you really need is a solid LOR from a renowned surgeon. As long as you pass school, what really matters is a LOR. Of course, if you don't have an LOR from a renowned surgeon, then grades/STEP/research/aways matters. I remember reading about a Nobel prize winner (I think it was John Nash). Basically, the Princeton PhD Math program accepted him because his undergrad professor gave him a letter saying... Interesting WaPo article on physician pay
The study authors took a unique approach, linking Medicare's registry of physicians (the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System, or NPPES) to physicians' tax information with their NPIs and specialties. They analyzed more than 10 million tax records from 965,000 physicians over 13 years. They focused on “peak earning years”, ages 40-55. Radiation oncology fell 3rd on the list, at $709,000. Neurosurgeons (about $920,000) and orthopedic surgeons ($789,000) were 1st and 2nd. These 2... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

IMG chances at Neurosurgery
Hello, I'm a first-year medical student studying at University College Cork Ireland. From what I've read so far, planning early--especially for more competitive specialties (i.e. neurosurgery)--is extremely important to get into US residencies. Any IMGs who matched to neurosurgery willing to share their stats, tactics, research experiences, etc.? I'd love to chat. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Anesthesia Rec Letter Question
Hi everybody, first time poster here, so forgive me for mistakes Quick question, thinking of applying anesthesia this cycle. Advisor from school says I need to have an Surgery letter. During year 3, I did my core surgery and obgyn at hospital A. During those two rotations, I got two kick ass letters (attendings reviewed them with me) from the department of anesthesia. I also got a Surgery letter from clinical director of surgery from that surgery rotation. I have a sub I in anesthesia... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What is ophthalmology residency lifestyle like?
I'm a rising M2 who's trying to decide on a specialty ASAP (had a 0 production M1 so I need to get research now) and something I take pretty seriously is a manageable work life balance during residency. I understand that it is surgical and thus am not expecting something super chill like psych, but I cannot do something on the order of neurosurgery, ortho, CT surg, or general surgery based on the residents I have talked to in those fields. Uro and ENT residency also sounds pretty brutal. I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
