GW vs Rush vs UMass
I can see myself at any of these schools, so I would appreciate any insight! GW Pros: -public health emphasis -Whitman-Walker Clinic (LGBTQ+ care), I can volunteer here which is very important to me -DC seems like a great area -Well-regarded throughout the US Cons: -expensive area -Kind of got the vibe that students are in class all day and don’t have much flexibility with their own schedules (unsure how true this is) Rush Pros: -top-ranked neurology/neurological surgery program, and... MSUCOM-EL vs. KCU-Jopling
I have been blessed with multiple D.O. acceptances and I’ve narrowed it down to these two schools! I would OOS state for both as I am a Florida resident. I don’t know exactly what I want to do in terms of specialty but I am definitely leaning towards hands-on specialties such as surgery, or G.I. (specifically Neurogastro b/c of doing procedures like colonoscopy/endoscopies). With this being said I wrote this sporadically tired after work. There may be jumps and incomplete thoughts so I... neurosurgeons doing pain medicine injections
Holy crap! I did anesthesia today in a surgicenter for two neurosurgeons who did a bunch of spinal injections. I was blown away. One of the guys did two level bilateral transforaminal epidural steroid injections, all with an AP projection, no lateral projection - and 4 blobograms. He also did a lumbar sympathetic nerve block for leg pain (no contrast was used), and a bunch of facet injections with needle placements all over the place. It is no wonder that insurance companies get... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Ultrasound Elective
Serious and possibly dumb question. Is ultrasound a useless skill for someone who wants to go into neurosurgery residency? Perhaps it would be useful intern year? I have a free elective slot available 4th year and I have the option of this elective. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

DO in Neurosurgery
One of my top choices as a specialty has always been neurosurgery. In choosing medical school, I ended up at a DO school for a variety of reasons, including financial ones. I understand that getting into a position in a neurosurgery program will be incredibly competitive and mixed with luck. I am also aware that I still may end up changing my mind with rotations and other experiences. Despite this, I have shadowed a few surgeons in various fields, and, while all were exciting, the... Neurosurgery as a laid back specialty
A while back, I remember someone asking what the most laid back residencies and specialties were. Someone, who as far as I am concerned was a physician, replied that they should look into neurosurgery. This is because they heard neurosurgery is really laid back. Last time I checked, the comment had around 20-30 likes on it. I started to figure why this could be true. Yes, it probably has a large technical element to it and might require a lot of effort while actually practicing. However... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Intraop Transfusion - help me change my mind
My neurosurgeons (cranis and spines) believe that a HCT below 30% is basically an ischemic event and that all patients should have a postop INR <=1.4 with fibrinogen >250 and plts >150k. I'd feel more job satisfaction if I had some rationale behind these parameters. Please tell me about the risk of coagulopathies, horrible hematomas/hemorrhages, etc. TIA (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Importance of Advanced Procedures in Fellowship?
Hello Pain Docs, Recently matched pain fellow here. While I am excited for my next year of training, I am a bit bummed about my match to be honest. It's a solid, big-name program with mainly B&B, SCS trials and permanents, and some PNS, but not a ton more. No Kypho (IR does them), pumps (neurosurg does these, though very few), vertiflex, or intracept. During my interview the program argued that many of those advanced procedures are still less proven, and most pain docs in the community... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
