Looking myself in the mirror now - a regretful resident
Hi, I’m a CA3 and I’m lost. I’m lost because I fabricated this idea that all would be ok, and it’s not. I failed to match neurosurgery 4 years ago due to my ineptitude to take standardized tests. There were 6 failed residents my year, the 5 others took time off, re applied and are all residents in neurosurgery. My brother is a PgY 7 and just got his job offer…$900k plus 4K per call night plus RVU bonus. This is in Florida. My starting salary in the same city is 380k, with the hope of... pain mgmt doing microdiscectomies
I'm an M2 and I've heard from some anesthesia pain mgmt friends that they do micro discectomies and some other simple spine procedures like spinal cord stimulators. Are these the same type of procedures that neurosurgeons and orthopedic spine surgeons perform? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Questions about Subdural Hematoma Evacuations
My colleague and I are participating in a course called The National Science Foundation's Innovation Corps (I-Corps) and are performing some background research on an unmet need in the field of subdural hematoma evacuations. We would really appreciate any insight on any one or more of these questions: When you were performing your last subdural hematoma evacuation, what was the biggest challenge you faced? How long did your last procedure take? When you have an older patient... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Oculoplastics combined with retina fellowship
I have noticed that its not uncommon for some attendings to have completed two fellowships. One combo that I have seen is oculoplastics and neuro-ophthalmology; I imagine one reason for this may be how frequently oculoplastic surgeons see ptosis patients in clinic, although they definitely treat more conditions than just ptosis. I am curious if it is feasible to complete oculoplastics and a different second fellowship, such as retina (more likely medical retina over surgical). I am honestly... SI fusion
I have a neurosurgeon near me that has been sending me a lot of diagnostic si injections for possible fusion recently. Up until now I’ve not been a big fan of the concept of fusing the si joint. I’m wondering if I should be a team player, do the shot, and send them back, or talk with the patient and give my honest opinion about si fusion. Wondering what everyone’s experience is with this, and if they’ve seen good outcomes from surgical si fusions (Source: Student Doctor Network)

do you need to have exceptional intelligence to be a good neurosurgeon?
I was just wondering, is becoming a successful neurosurgeon really as unattainable and challenging as most average people make it out to be, or is it just like any other specialty, you just learn and get better at what you do? my dream has always been to become a neurosurgeon, and its really all I think about, but it just seems that only geniuses are in the field. Also, how easy is it to make a mistake when you are doing a surgery...do all the procedures you do once you finish... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

DBS for addiction: bad journalism
Brain implant may help fight opioid addiction when other treatments fail Doctors at West Virginia University’s Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute are testing the experimental procedure on patients for whom other treatments didn't work. www.nbcnews.com Notable for continued conflation of benzodiazepines and opioids. Is neuro-ophthalmology a subspecialty worth considering?
M4 here, just submitted my residency app for neuro. I don't know much about neuro-ophthalmology and info on it seems relatively sparse compared to other neuro subspecialties... Is it a subspecialty worth considering today? What exactly do they do day to day? What does the field's future look like? Do they do any kinds of surgeries or procedures? According to its Wiki page, neuro-ophthalmologists "may be trained to perform eye muscle surgery to treat adult strabismus, optic nerve... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Despise my gap year job...will med schools hate me?!
Hi! I needed money asap so I applied for a bunch of clinical research coordinator positions and chose the first one that accepted me. The lab is a neurosurgery lab at my dream med school, and my title is clinical research coordinator but I'm basically an administrative assistant. It has been 2 months and I am very unhappy with the job, but recently, one of the jobs I had applied to prior to receiving the offer for this job contacted me about a new opening. It is in the same hospital... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Why don ’t we just start giving our own?
Dermpath didn’t ask pathology if it was ok to read skin cancers. Gastroenterologists didn’t ask surgeons if they could do colonoscopies. Neurologists didn’t ask if they could give TMZ. IR didn’t get permission to steal dozens of procedures and form their own specialty. Why don’t we just start giving radiosensitizing chemotherapy as part of our training. That could open the door to other systemic agents and then maybe we could work our way up from the bottom of the food chain and become a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Reapplicant: Should I give up on neurosurgery?
Hi. I'm a US MD grad who soaped into a prelim year after not matching neurosurgery. I had 4 interviews and applied broadly. Stats: Step 1: 250 Step2: 245 Clinical Grades: Mix of pass and high pass (I was told this was going to be the reason I had trouble matching). I think I can also definitely improve my personal statement, but I'm not sure that will help much anyway. My research also would be considered below average for neurosurgery. I only have a few published papers and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Which specialty pays you well in urban area like nyc/boston/sf
Current M1 here. I am a city person but from what I heard, jobs in big cities do not pay you well. I am an average student and not aiming for ultra-competitive specialities like neurosurgery. Realistically speaking, what specialty would allow me to bring home $300K/yr after tax working in a big city or the suburb area of SF/boston/nyc, while also has good work-life balance? My personal experience having neurosurgery
It's been a year since I had microvascular decompression surgery for trigeminal/nasopharyngeal neuralgia. Through most of 2020 I had intractable severe pain on the right side of my tongue. First we tried tegretol and then trileptal but the pain persisted. The neurosurgery department at the hospital I work at is fantastic and the chairman performed microvascular decompression surgery on me. He made a hole behind my right ear and pushed an artery off the cranial nerve- so far I remain pain... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
