Opting out of BSMD
OK I am in a BSMD program, whose med school has not much match rates in Neurosurgery. As a high schooler, I thought getting into BSMD was good enough and didn’t worry too much. Now that I am trying to make the journey, Iam split. Should I leave the BSMD program and try for better Med School wasting 1 year trying yo get a good MCAT and focus on extracurriculars or to continue in the same school. If I continue, how do I improve my match rates into this very competitive field from a college... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Do pubs from gap year(s) matter for residency apps?
I am on 3-4 publications from my time as a research tech in a basic science neurosurgical lab during a gap year. I am not a top 3 author on any of them. Do these matter at all? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

MS1 curious about Neurosurgery residency
Hi everyone. I am an MS1 interested in Neurosurgery. I know the common things I have been told to focus on is research, step 2, research, rotation grades, LORs and oh did I mention research? I know research in particular plays a massive role in matching neurosurgery, I was just wondering that someone who matched neurosurgery at a Barrow or UCSF what does their research output look like? How many research items and how many first-author papers? Also how big of a role do class rank and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Cardiointerventional Radiology
Just out of curiosity, why didn't Coronary artery disease catheterization/stenting end up being treated in a similar fashion to what happened with the arteries that feed the brain? In the neuro realm, even though Neurologists are still the main person diagnosing the patient and making long term management decisions about antithrombotic therapy and statins, they are usually not the ones performing the procedures (which go to surgeons and radiologists). Do you think that there is... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Chances for ortho? - failed third block of MS1
I'm an M1 at a mid-tier med school and I just failed one of my blocks (neuro). I am doing remediation in a month. MSK was my first and best block and everything went downhill from there due to some family and personal problems. Barely passed my second block (cardio and pulm) as well. I feel like I probably am at the bottom of my class now. I think I might be interested in orthopedic surgery considering that I really enjoyed gross anatomy lab and MSK. Will this be a big red flag when it... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Columbia vs. UPENN
Hi, I have pretty much narrowed down my acceptances to UPENN and Columbia but am at a loss. As someone who enjoys planning, this is quite stressing me out. I am wondering if I am being silly and ignoring an obvious answer or if my "cons" are solvable. Thoughts? Thank u in advance ! COLUMBIA Pros: - Already connected with the neurosurgery department including the chair, invited to Zoom grand rounds starting ASAP - Both interviewers super nice and welcoming, one invited me to dinners... Specialties with surgical procedures?
Hi, just had a question about residencies following vet school. I know it's a long way off, but I want to specialize in a surgical field (obviously could change) and want to know about all of my potential options. I know large/small/food animal surgery are all surgically focused obviously, but are there any other specialties where surgical procedures are common? An example I didn't realize was neurology- I didn't know it also entailed surgery on the brain, spinal cord and CNS. Would other... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Role of Prestige for Internship and Residency
Hello, was hoping to maybe get some insight on a question I’ve seen a lot of mixed answers on. I’m wanting to specialize after vet school (most likely in neurology/neurosurgery or large animal surgery, could change of course) and plan to do 1-2 years of internship and hopefully a residency straight out of vet school (knock on wood lol). However, I’ve heard from some alumni from schools I’m interested in that the prestige of a school does matter for getting matched- but I’ve heard others say... Where should i do my ortho away rotation?
3rd year doing some neurotic away rotation planning and i'm really struggling with figuring out how to not do aways at TOO competitive places, and applying to programs in my competitive range. For context these are my stats: excellent leadership and volunteering experience, 33 pubs (11 pubmed indexed pubs), GHHS, honored 4/6 rotations so far, but third quartile at a low-ranked school (poor M1/2 performance (no failures/repeats)). and Step 1 PF but no Step 2 till may, I just need a...
