Bioactive components of whole grain and their effect on health
Nutr Hosp. 2024 Mar 14. doi: 10.20960/nh.04986. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNon-communicable diseases represent a global health burden with increasing prevalence. To prevent or improve this type of diseases, dietary strategies based on healthy foods have been suggested. Cereals are the most consumed foods in the world and preventive effects of whole grains on health have been described. The germ and bran of cereals are abundant in bioactive compounds, including phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals and fibers, and these compounds are effective in preventing and improving non-communicable diseases. This review analyzes the c...

Association between uncarboxylated osteocalcin, blood glucose, and BMI among Saudi diabetic patients: an evaluation study
CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that, in Saudi type II diabetes mellitus patients, the compromised glucose level is associated with diminished serum uncarboxylated osteocalcin. This study has limitations, such as a small sample size and only measuring the uncarboxylated form of plasma osteocalcin. Future research is needed to understand how anti-diabetic drugs affect undercarboxylated osteocalcin's effect on metabolic control and provide more efficient techniques and resources in diabetes and osteoporosis prevention and care.PMID:38497883 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202403_35615 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)

Decaffeinated green tea polyphenols supplementation had no adverse health effects in girls with obesity: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: This study indicated that the supplementation of 400 mg/d DGTP for 12 weeks had no adverse health effects in girls with obesity, providing evidence for the DGTP adoption in children research.PMID:38494693 | DOI:10.6133/apjcn.202403_33(1).0012 (Source: Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

Sr2[B5O8(OH)]2 ·[B(OH)3]·H2O: A Strontium Borate That Shows Deep-Ultraviolet-Transparent Nonlinear Optical Properties
Chemistry. 2024 Mar 18:e202400739. doi: 10.1002/chem.202400739. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA new noncentrosymmetric strontium borate, P1-Sr2[B5O8(OH)]2·[B(OH)3]·H2O (1), has been synthesized under the hydrothermal condition. The P1-Sr2[B5O8(OH)]2·[B(OH)3]·H2O shows a layered B-O network with 9-ring windows in the ab plane. Sr2+ cations, H3BO3, and H2O molecules are located in the voids of layers and interlayers, respectively. The P1-Sr2[B5O8(OH)]2·[B(OH)3]·H2O is the first synthetic phase of veatchite, while the other three polymorphs are found in different natural minerals. This strontium borate is a potential de...

Time evolution of moduli of a polymer-induced liquid precursor (PILP) of calcium carbonate
Chem Commun (Camb). 2024 Mar 18. doi: 10.1039/d4cc00449c. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn situ AFM observations show that when PILP droplets contact a surface, their initial properties are either a liquid with a high interfacial tension (350 mJ m-2) or a soft gel-like material with a low modulus (less than 0.2 MPa). These findings suggest that PILP may initially be liquid-like to infiltrate collagen fibrils, enabling the production of interpenetrating composites, and/or become viscoelastic, to provide a means for moulding minerals.PMID:38498350 | DOI:10.1039/d4cc00449c (Source: Chemical Communications)
