International Perspectives: Microcephaly and Zika Virus Infection in Brazil
The Zika virus was discovered incidentally in Uganda in 1947 and had remained confined to an equatorial zone across Africa and Asia. A great outbreak of Zika virus was described in Micronesia (2007) and in Polynesia (2013–2014). An epidemic Zika virus infection was reported in 2015 in South and Central America and in the Caribbean. In Brazil, the first autochthonus case was reported in May 2015 in the northeastern region of the country and spread quickly to 22 states. Epidemiologic evidence suggests that this outbreak is associated with the increased number of infants born with congenital microcephaly in 2015–2...

Dying Coral Reefs Likely To Be Walloped For Third Year In A Row
Coral reefs, already reeling from a two-year global bleaching event that has left large swaths of ocean biomes dying or dead, will likely continue to suffer during a third year of warmer oceans, researchers warned Monday. Key reefs, particularly those around the U.S., will likely face widespread destruction as the third global bleaching event in recorded history continues, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. Warm oceans have wrought havoc on the planet's coral since mid-2014, spurred by a particularly strong El Nino, which waned earlier this year. “This is the most widespread, longest ...

Scientists Strengthen the Link Between Zika Virus and Temporary Paralysis
(LONDON) — Scientists may have the first evidence that Zika can cause temporary paralysis, according to a new study of patients who developed the rare condition during an outbreak of the virus in Tahiti two years ago. Zika is currently spreading with alarming speed across the Americas. The World Health Organization declared the epidemic to be a global emergency several weeks ago based on suspicions it may be behind a surge in disturbing birth defects and in Guillain-Barre syndrome, a neurological illness that mostly lasts a few weeks. Before reaching South America last year, the mosquito-spread Zika had triggered out...
