Characterizing Family Planning Utilization in Adult Women and Adolescents in Pohnpei, Federerated States of Micronesia
ConclusionsOur findings suggest that young, unmarried, never pregnant women face an unmet need for family planning. Additionally, women with lower access to and use of healthcare services have lower use of family planning. (Source: Maternal and Child Health Journal)

Zika virus: Antiviral immune response, inflammation, and cardiotonic steroids as antiviral agents
Int Immunopharmacol. 2023 Dec 15;127:111368. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2023.111368. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTZika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne virus first reported from humans in Nigeria in 1954. The first outbreak occurred in Micronesia followed by an outbreak in French Polynesia and another in Brazil when the virus was associated with numerous cases of severe neurological manifestations such as Guillain-Barre syndrome in adults and congenital zika syndrome in fetuses, particularly congenital microcephaly. Innate immunity is the first line of defense against ZIKV through triggering an antiviral immune response. Along...

Quantifying longline bycatch mortality for pelagic sharks in western Pacific shark sanctuaries
Sci Adv. 2023 Aug 18;9(33):eadg3527. doi: 10.1126/sciadv.adg3527. Epub 2023 Aug 16.ABSTRACTMarine protected areas are increasingly touted for their role in conserving large marine predators such as sharks, but their efficacy is debated. Seventeen "shark sanctuaries" have been established globally, but longline fishing continues within many such jurisdictions, leading to unknown levels of bycatch mortality levels. Using public data from Global Fishing Watch and Regional Fisheries Management Organizations, we quantified longline fishing within eight shark sanctuaries and estimated pelagic shark catch and mortality for seven ...

Multilocus Sequence Analysis and Detection of Copper Ion Resistance of < em > Xanthomonas phaseoli < /em > pv. < em > manihotis < /em > Causing Bacterial Blight in Cassava
Curr Issues Mol Biol. 2023 Jun 28;45(7):5389-5402. doi: 10.3390/cimb45070342.ABSTRACTCassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is an important tropical tuber crop around the world. Cassava bacterial blight, caused by Xanthomonas phaseoli pv. manihotis, is a key disease that influences cassava production worldwide. Between 2008 and 2020, 50 X. phaseoli pv. manihotis strains were isolated from diseased plant samples or acquired from China, Uganda, Cambodia, Colombia, Malaysia, and Micronesia. Using multilocus sequence analysis, the genetic diversity of X. phaseoli pv. manihotis strains was evaluated. A neighbor-joining phylogenetic...
