Impact of body mass index on outcome and treatment-related toxicity in young adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia
CONCLUSION: Severe obesity is associated with worse EFS in young adults treated according to the non-HR arms of the NOPHO ALL2008 protocol. Poorer outcome is explained with a higher risk of relapse, possibly due to under treatment, and not caused by excess therapy-related mortality.PMID:37725524 | DOI:10.1080/0284186X.2023.2258450 (Source: Acta Oncologica)

Social media emotions annotation guide (SMEmo): Development and initial validity
Behav Res Methods. 2023 Sep 11. doi: 10.3758/s13428-023-02195-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe proper measurement of emotion is vital to understanding the relationship between emotional expression in social media and other factors, such as online information sharing. This work develops a standardized annotation scheme for quantifying emotions in social media using recent emotion theory and research. Human annotators assessed both social media posts and their own reactions to the posts' content on scales of 0 to 100 for each of 20 (Study 1) and 23 (Study 2) emotions. For Study 1, we analyzed English-language posts from ...

In vitro screening and characterization of lactic acid bacteria from Lithuanian fermented food with potential probiotic properties
The present work aimed to identify probiotic candidates from Lithuanian homemade fermented food samples. A total of 23 lactic acid bacteria were isolated from different fermented food samples. Among these, only 12 showed resistance to low pH, tolerance to pepsin, bile salts, and pancreatin. The 12 strains also exhibited antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 14028, Streptococcus pyogenes ATCC 12384, Streptococcus pyogenes ATCC 19615, and Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 13883. Cell-free supernatants of isolate 3A and 55w showed the strongest antioxidant activity of 26.37 μ...

A comprehensive analysis of all-cause and cause-specific excess deaths in 30 countries during 2020
This study analysed cause-of-death data provided by the World Health Organization from 2011 to 2019 to estimate excess deaths in 2020 in 30 countries. Over-dispersed Poisson regression models were used to estimate the number of deaths that would have been expected if the pandemic had not occurred, separately for men and women. The models included year and age categories to account for temporal trends and changes in size and age structure of the populations. Excess deaths were calculated by subtracting observed deaths  from expected ones. Our analysis revealed significant excess deaths from ischemic heart diseases (IHD) (i...

Medical issues and people in view of the seventeenth-century latin works published in krak Ów

The main purpose of the research is to present the leading persons of academic medicine working in those times in this city and to follow through the se- lected works, which constitute a part of Neo-Latin literature in the Polish-Lithuanian Com- monwealth. The scholastic way of the discourse did not always mean overuse of the authori- ties, however both ancient and modern were being evoked. By presenting the segment...

The academic impact and value of an international online surgery lecture series
AbstractDue to the worldwide travel restrictions caused by the 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic, many universities and students lost opportunities to engage in international exchange over the past 2 years. Teleconferencing systems have thus been developed to compensate for severe travel restrictions. Kansai Medical University in Japan and Vilnius University in Lithuania have a collaborative research and academic relationship. The two universities have been conducting an online joint international surgery lecture series for the medical students of both universities. Fifteen lectures were given from October 2021 to May 2022...

Fetal head-down posture may explain the rapid brain evolution in humans and other primates: an interpretative review
This article collaterally opens a new insight into the conundrum of high cephalopelvic proportions (i.e., the tight fit between the pelvic birth canal and fetal head) in phylogenetically distant lineages of monkeys, lesser apes, and humans. Low cephalopelvic proportions in non-human great apes could be accounted for by their energetically efficient horizontal nest-sleeping and consequently by their larger body mass compared to monkeys and lesser apes that sleep upright. One can further hypothesize that brain size varies in anthropoids according to the degree of exposure of the fetus to postural verticality. The supporting ...
