Computed Tomography-Assessed Sarcopenia Predicts Mortality in Kidney Transplant Candidates
CONCLUSIONS: Sarcopenia was ~5 times more frequent in patients with end-stage renal disease than in healthy controls and was positively correlated with the prognostic nutritional index. Sarcopenia was an independent risk factor for mortality in patients on transplant waiting lists.PMID:38695590 | DOI:10.6002/ect.2023.0050 (Source: Experimental and Clinical Transplantation : official journal of the Middle East Society for Organ Transplantation)

Surgical Treatment of Medically Refractory Encapsulating Peritoneal Sclerosis in a Patient After Kidney Transplant
Exp Clin Transplant. 2024 Mar;22(3):239-241. doi: 10.6002/ect.2023.0265.ABSTRACTEncapsulating peritoneal sclerosis is a rare but highly morbid disease process in patients with end-stage kidney disease on peritoneal dialysis. Surgical management has been described in patients with encapsulation of bowel causing obstruction. Here, we describe a case of surgical management in a patient following kidney transplant with medically refractory ascites and lower extremity edema.PMID:38695593 | DOI:10.6002/ect.2023.0265 (Source: Experimental and Clinical Transplantation : official journal of the Middle East Society for Organ Transplantation)

Succinylation of Park 7 Activates a Protective Metabolic Response to Acute Kidney Injury
In this study we show in vitro and in vivo that Park7 has a crucial role in protection from AKI, and upregulated peroxisome activity. These data in combination with published results of Park7's protective role in cardiovascular damage and chronic kidney disease lead us to hypothesize that succinylation of Park7 may ameliorate oxidative damage resulting from AKI and prevent disease progression. This novel mechanism provides a potential therapeutic mechanism that can be targeted.PMID:38695076 | DOI:10.1152/ajprenal.00062.2024 (Source: American Journal of Physiology. Renal Physiology)

Richter supraumbilical hernia managed with invagination: a case report
CONCLUSION: Diagnosis of Richter's hernia demands higher suspicion, particularly in patients with predisposing factors like a history of minimally invasive surgery. Prompt surgical intervention is crucial for reducing mortality and enhancing prognosis, with invagination alone being adequate if ischaemia is confined and mesh placement is unnecessary.PMID:38694393 | PMC:PMC11060237 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001943 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Approval of Mycophenolate Mofetil for Prophylaxis of Organ Rejection in Pediatric Recipients of Heart or Liver Transplants: A Regulatory Perspective
Clin Pharmacol Ther. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1002/cpt.3288. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOn June 6, 2022, the FDA expanded the indications for mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) to include the prophylaxis of organ rejection in combination with other immunosuppressants in pediatric recipients of allogeneic heart or liver transplants aged 3 months and older. The approved oral dosing regimen for these patients was a starting dose of 600 mg/m2 with titration up to a maximum of 900 mg/m2 twice daily. Data to support efficacy in pediatric patients were derived from established pharmacokinetic (PK) relationships across approved populations...

Outcomes of Kidneys Transplanted From Hepatitis C Viremic Donors to Naive Recipients From an Appalachian Rural Kidney Transplant Program
CONCLUSIONS: Use of hepatitis C-viremic donor kidneys for transplant is a safe option and has great potential to increase the kidney donor pool, as long as high index of suspicion is maintained for allograft rejection and opportunistic infections.PMID:38695587 | DOI:10.6002/ect.2024.0034 (Source: Experimental and Clinical Transplantation : official journal of the Middle East Society for Organ Transplantation)

Experiences of Participation in a Study Investigating Feasibility of the Implantable Doppler Probe in Kidney Transplantation: An Embedded Qualitative Study
CONCLUSIONS: The clinical need for blood flow sensing technology in kidney transplants has been widely acknowledged. Implantable Doppler probes may be a beneficial adjunct in the early postoperative surveillance of kidney transplant patients. However, the device's technical limitations are the main challenges to its acceptance in clinical practice.PMID:38695588 | DOI:10.6002/ect.2023.0273 (Source: Experimental and Clinical Transplantation : official journal of the Middle East Society for Organ Transplantation)

Improving Kidney Transplant Rates in Obese CKD Patients by Sleeve Gastrectomy
Obesity is a central obstacle to health and wellness in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD). It is linked to progression of CKD, a greater burden of disease and disability, and reduced access to kidney transplant.1-3 Moreover, obesity is a common condition in CKD, being seen in nearly 50% of individuals with CKD stages 3 and 4.4 As a highly prevalent and major risk factor for adverse outcomes, obesity has been receiving increasing attention from the nephrology community as an urgent problem that needs addressing.
