Prevalence of Occult Hepatitis B Virus Infection in Blood Donors with Negative ID-NAT in Switzerland
Conclusion: Overall, we detected 7 viremic OBI carriers among 11,432 blood donors, which tested negative for HBV by standard HBV-ID-NAT and HBsAg screening. In contrast, OBI carriers showed positive anti-HBc findings which could be confirmed in 83.8% of the cases. Thus, OBI might be missed by the current HBV screening process of Swiss blood donors. We suggest to review current HBV screening algorithm. West Nile Virus in Germany: An Emerging Infection and Its Relevance for Transfusion Safety
West Nile virus (WNV) is an arthropod-borne virus (arbovirus). It circulates in an enzootic cycle between ornithophilic mosquitoes as vectors and reservoirs and avian host species for amplification, but humans can be infected as accidental hosts. In most individuals, WNV infection remains silent, while 20% develop mild symptoms of West Nile fever, and only 1% develop neuroinvasive disease (WNND). Human WNV cases have been identified in Southern and Eastern Europe for more than 20 years, but until 2018, Germany was considered to be a non-endemic country. Suitability of Different Diagnostic Platforms for Virological Testing of Blood Samples from Cornea Donors
Conclusion: Overall, fluctuations of test results for serological and NAT parameters in pre- and post-mortem blood samples examined in this study, were only limited and within the range of what is also observed when routinely testing fresh patient specimens. Effect of Blood Groups on Clinical Presentations and Treatment Outcomes in Immune Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura Patients with Severe ADAMTS13 Deficiency: A Multi-Center Experience
Conclusions: The distribution of group “A” among patients with iTTP was higher than expected. Although not statistically significant, patients with blood group “O” required more TPE for the treatment and relapse rate was statistically higher than other blood groups. Mortality rate in all patients was 6.7%.
