Does Offline Beat Inline Treatment: Investigation into Extracorporeal Photopheresis
Conclusions: The offline procedure, as established in our department, provides more apoptotic cells for treatment. The increased number of mononuclear cells collected outweighs a slightly reduced apoptosis rate after 24 h in comparison to the inline procedure. Besides this, the final decision for one or the other procedure has to take into account additional aspects, such as peripheral white blood cell count, hematocrit, and weight of the patient, required before apheresis, extracorporeal volume, and, last but not least, overall costs. The final criterion, however, has to be the reported clinical efficacy of the system app...

Liberal Transfusion versus Restrictive Transfusion and Outcomes in Critically Ill Adults: A Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: In this study, we found that the restrictive red-cell transfusion strategy potentially reduced in-hospital mortality in critically ill adults with anemia compared with the liberal strategy.Transfus Med Hemother (Source: Transfusion Medicine and Hemotherapy)

Thromboelastography Detects Possible Coagulation Disturbance in Pediatric Patients with Portal Cavernoma
Conclusion: TEG analysis showed that patients with PC were in a hypercoagulable state that could be partially masked by thrombocytopenia secondary to splenomegaly and hypersplenism in these patients, which indicates that our current prophylaxis and therapy regimen could be improved.Transfus Med Hemother (Source: Transfusion Medicine and Hemotherapy)

Validation of Microbiological Testing of Cellular Medicinal Products Containing Antibiotics
Conclusions: Culturing cellular products in the presence of antibiotics can serve as an effective method to reduce contamination risk but only if the chosen antibiotics neither have any influence on specifications of the investigational medicinal product nor interfere with microbiological tests. Consequently, cells and tissues primarily contaminated with microorganisms, like placenta, may be considered as a source of cellular therapeutics when cultured for a sufficient time with antibiotics and tested with a validated method. The choice of microorganisms for the validation of the microbiological test should always consider...

Rhesus D Antigenic Determinants on Residual Red Blood Cells in Apheresis and Buffy Coat Platelet Concentrates
Conclusions: Processing methods influence the quantity and nature of contaminating residual RBCs and RBC-derived particles in PCs. The estimation of residual RBCs in these blood products is generally based on measurements of intact RBCs, which might underestimate the risk for alloim munization in transfused patients. The question of whether these RBC-derived particles can produce an immune response and, thus, should then be taken into consideration for Rh immune prophylactic treatments, remains to be clarified.Transfus Med Hemother (Source: Transfusion Medicine and Hemotherapy)

New Approaches to Cryopreservation of Cells, Tissues, and Organs
In this concept article, we outline a variety of new approaches that have been conceived to address some of the remaining challenges for developing improved methods of biopreservation. This recognizes a true renaissance and variety of complimentary, high-potential approaches leveraging inspiration by nature, nanotechnology, the thermodynamics of pressure, and several other key fields. Development of an organ and tissue supply chain that can meet the healthcare demands of the 21st century means overcoming twin challenges of (1) having enough of these lifesaving resources and (2) having the means to store and transport them ...

Human Brucellosis: Risks and Prevalence among Iranian Blood Donors Residing in Endemic Areas
Conclusion: The observed data show a somewhat noticeable prevalence among Iranian blood donors, bringing attention to the importance of pre-donation screening via a questionnaire which supplies answers about occupational history, and any history of exposure or past infections. Further studies to evaluate the frequency and related risk factors in certain populations, in conjunction with implementing stricter regulations in blood donor selection in endemic areas, may be necessary.Transfus Med Hemother (Source: Transfusion Medicine and Hemotherapy)

The Sting of Rejection: Deferring Blood Donors due to Low Hemoglobin Values Reduces Future Returns
Conclusion: LHD have detrimental impacts on donor return, especially if they occur repeatedly – suggesting that avoiding false LHD and helping donors to better cope with them helps to maintain the pool of prospective donors.Transfus Med Hemother (Source: Transfusion Medicine and Hemotherapy)

Recommendations regarding Practical DEL Typing Strategies for Serologically D-Negative Asian Donors
Conclusions: Two practical DEL typing strategies using RhCE phenotyping as an initial screening method were recommended for serologically D-negative Asian donors. Compared with DEL typing usingRHD genotyping, serological DEL typing using adsorption-elution test is predicted to increase the incidence of anti-D alloimmunization and decrease the D-negative donor pool without having any cost-competitiveness but can be used in laboratories where molecular methods are not applicable.Transfus Med Hemother (Source: Transfusion Medicine and Hemotherapy)
