Factor XIII in the Acute Care Setting and Its Relevance in Obstetric Bleeding
Background: Major hemorrhage is one of the main causes of preventable mortality in either severe trauma, high-risk surgical patient, or the obstetric population. As underlined by the cell-based coagulation model, a resistant and stable clot is essential to prevent or to stop an ongoing bleeding. Coagulation factor XIII (FXIII) stabilizes the newly formed clot by cross-linking the fibrin monomers into a three-dimensional network and by impeding fibrinolysis. Thus, FXIII is an essential coagulation factor in the acutely bleeding patient.Summary: Acquired FXIII deficiency is much more common than the inherited form. On the ba...

Trends of Blood Transfusion According to Diseases in Korea: A 10-Year Nationwide Cohort Study
Conclusions: The proportion of transfusion procedures in the total population increased owing to the increase in the total number of transfusions in patients aged 80 years or older. The proportion of patients with trauma and hematologic diseases has also increased. Moreover, the total number of inpatients has been increasing, which subsequently increases the number of blood transfusions performed. Specific management strategies targeting these groups may improve blood management.Transfus Med Hemother (Source: Transfusion Medicine and Hemotherapy)

The Prognostic Value of TP53 Mutations in Adult Acute Myeloid Leukemia: A Meta-Analysis
Conclusion: TP53 mutation exhibits a promising potential for discriminating AML patients with a worse prognosis, thus being capable of serving as a novel tool for prognostication and therapeutic decision-making in the management of AML.Transfus Med Hemother (Source: Transfusion Medicine and Hemotherapy)

Immunomodulatory Properties of Packed Red Blood Cells during Storage
Conclusion: This in vitro study demonstrates that stored RBC SN will have mixed immunomodulatory effects depending on responder cells and conditions, independent of RBC storage age. Fresh RBCs containing relatively few EVs can induce immune responses. Residual plasma in the products may contribute to these effects.Transfus Med Hemother (Source: Transfusion Medicine and Hemotherapy)

Follow-Up of Plasma Donors after Quarantine Storage: Results of a 5-Year Survey in Germany
Conclusion: No positive donation were found under the current screening regime and the quarantine storage during the 5-year survey period. In view of the current type and sensitivity of screening tests in German blood establishments, the results allow a reassessment of the value of quarantine storage of plasma regarding duration and release modalities. Due to the more sensitive donor screening, shorter quarantine periods as well as dispensing quarantine storage can be discussed. A reduction in the safety standard of plasma transfusions need not be feared, and the availability of plasma for transfusions could be facilitated...

Risk Factors and Outcomes of Stem Cell Mobilization Failure in Multiple Myeloma Patients
Conclusion: Absolute monocyte count #x3c;500/ µL, platelet count #x3c;150,000/µL, and treatment duration more than 180 days before stem cell mobilization are risk factors for unsuccessful stem cell collection. Our prediction models have high sensitivity and specificity for mobilization failure prediction and allow for early interventions for possible PMs.Transfus Med Hemother (Source: Transfusion Medicine and Hemotherapy)
