Evaluation of the Efficacy of Prolonged Pregabalin Administration Before and After Surgery in Patients Undergoing Arthroscopic Anterior Cruciate Ligament Repair: A Prospective, Randomized, Double-blind Study
Discussion: A prolonged preoperative and postoperative pregabalin prescription for anterior cruciate ligament repair decreased the need for supplementary analgesics during the first 24 postoperative hours but increased dizziness. (Source: The Clinical Journal of Pain)

Exploring the Psychometric Properties of the Current Opioid Misuse Measure Among Adults With Chronic Pain and Opioid Use
Discussion: Given the importance and relevance for opioid misuse in the context of chronic pain, it is important for researchers to continue assessing and providing psychometric evidence for the COMM. (Source: The Clinical Journal of Pain)

Psychological Predictors of Perceived Age and Chronic Pain Impact in Individuals With and Without Knee Osteoarthritis
Discussion: These findings highlight the importance of a biopsychosocial approach in understanding the intersection between psychological and physical factors associated with chronic pain. Addressing negative self-perceptions of aging, while simultaneously augmenting positive affect, through psychological therapies may mitigate pain and disability. Pressure Pain Tolerance Predicts the Success of Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy in Patients With Fibromyalgia
Discussion: Normal levels of pressure pain tolerance at baseline predicted greater improvement in clinical pain severity after EAET than CBT. Quantitative sensory testing may provide insights about individual responses to psychologically based therapies for individuals with chronic pain. (Source: The Clinical Journal of Pain)

Comparison of Adductor Canal Block and Femoral Triangle Block for Total Knee Arthroplasty
Objectives: Adductor canal block (ACB) could provide effective postoperative pain control for patients after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, some authors pointed out that the ACB as originally described may be more similar to a femoral triangle block (FTB). Recent neuroanatomic evidences made the authors conjecture that the “true” ACB would provide superior analgesia compared with FTB. Therefore, the study was designed to determine the hypothesis that postoperative analgesia after TKA could be improved by a “true” ACB compared with FTB. Materials and Methods: Patients undergoing unilateral, primary TKA...

Perceptions of Pain Treatment in Pediatric Patients With Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders
Discussion: Participants were knowledgeable regarding chronic pain, but still indicated that receiving a definite diagnosis would be the most helpful intervention. Most had tried multiple interventions and did not believe that further medication, testing, or surgery would solve their pain. Instead, parents presenting at this Functional Abdominal Pain Program appeared most hopeful about the benefits of multidisciplinary treatment approaches including psychological interventions, a focus on activity and functioning, and complementary and alternative medicine interventions. Hypervigilance for Bodily Sensations in the Back During a Movement Task in People With Chronic and Recurrent Low Back Pain
Discussion: The current study confirmed that individuals preparing a movement attended more toward somatosensory stimuli at the lower back when anticipating back pain during the movement, as measured by the N96 SEP. However, no differences were found between participants with chronic low back pain or recurrent low back pain, or the pain-free controls. (Source: The Clinical Journal of Pain)

Optimizing the Treatment of CRPS With Ketamine
This study aimed to develop a method that objectively measures the clinical benefits of ketamine infusions to treat complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), thus making it possible, for the first time, to determine the optimal dosing of ketamine and duration of treatment to treat CRPS. Materials and Methods: All patients were diagnosed with hyperalgesia associated with CRPS. Patients underwent an outpatient, 4-day, escalating dose ketamine infusion. Hyperalgesia was measured using pain thresholds. Clinical outcome was determined without knowledge of the patient’s pain thresholds throughout treatment. Results: We foun...

Defining Recovery in Chronic Whiplash: A Qualitative Study
Discussion: Recovery is a multidimensional and complex construct. In addition to pain intensity and disability, measurement and conceptualization of recovery should focus on emotional well-being, self-perception, and the cultural values and beliefs of the individual. A positive therapeutic relationship, with attention to psychological and social influences, appears to be important in facilitating recovery and well-being. (Source: The Clinical Journal of Pain)

Efficacy and Safety of Single and Multiple Doses of a Fixed-dose Combination of Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen in the Treatment of Postsurgical Dental Pain: Results From 2 Phase 3, Randomized, Parallel-group, Double-blind, Placebo-controlled Studies
Objectives: A previous pilot study demonstrated that various fixed-dose combinations (FDCs) of ibuprofen (IBU) and acetaminophen (APAP) provided analgesic efficacy comparable to a higher dose of IBU, with the same safety profile. These studies further evaluated the chosen FDC IBU/APAP 250/500 mg formulation. Materials and Methods: Two phase 3 dental pain studies enrolled healthy young patients with ≥moderate pain after ≥3 third molar extractions who received single-dose FDC IBU/APAP 250/500 mg, IBU 250 mg, APAP 650 mg, or placebo evaluated over 12 hours (study 1) or multiple-dose FDC or placebo every 8 hou...

Pain-related Self-efficacy Among People With Back Pain: A Systematic Review of Assessment Tools
Conclusions: Further research should focus on assessing validity and interpretability of these questionnaires, especially in pain-related target groups. Researchers should select questionnaires that are most appropriate for their study aims and the back pain population and contribute to further validation of these scales to best predict future behavior and develop intervention programs. This systematic review aids selection of pain-related assessment tools in back pain both in research and practice. (Source: The Clinical Journal of Pain)

Utilization of Health Care Resources by Long-term Care Residents as a Function of Pain Status
Discussion: To our knowledge, this is the first large-scale project to examine the utilization of health care resources as a function of pain status among LTC facility residents. Improved pain management in LTC facilities could lead to reduced health care use. (Source: The Clinical Journal of Pain)
