Investigating the Effects of Cuing Medication Availability on Patient-controlled Analgesia Pump Usage in Pediatric Patients: Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial
Objectives: The study of patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) behaviors has led to a greater understanding of factors that affect the pain experience. Although PCA behaviors can be influenced by cues to medication availability, no studies have examined the effects of such cues in pediatric populations. Materials and Methods: This randomized controlled trial examined patient satisfaction with pain management, PCA behaviors, opioid consumption, and state anxiety in a sample of 125 postsurgical children and adolescents (7 to 17 y). Patients were randomized to a “light” group (lockout period status cued by light...

Perioperative Pregabalin for Preventive Analgesia in Breast Cancer Surgery: A Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
This study demonstrated that pregabalin showed more efficacy on chronic pain than acute pain after a breast cancer surgery. Further study based on doses and treatment course of pregabalin should be conducted to establish stronger evidence of treatment effects. (Source: The Clinical Journal of Pain)

Criteria Used for the Diagnosis of Myofascial Trigger Points in Clinical Trials on Physical Therapy: Updated Systematic Review
Conclusions: A number of the included studies failed in properly reporting the MTrP diagnostic criteria. Moreover, high variability in the use of MTrP diagnostic was also observed. Spot tenderness, referred pain, and local twitch response were the 3 most popular criteria (and the most frequently used combination). A lack of transparency in the reporting of MTrP diagnostic criteria is present in the literature. Registry: This systematic review was registered under the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, PROSPERO number: CRD42018087420. (Source: The Clinical Journal of Pain)

Placebo Response Reduction and Accurate Pain Reporting Training Reduces Placebo Responses in a Clinical Trial on Chronic Low Back Pain: Results From a Comparison to the Literature
Discussion: These findings are consistent with results from other studies showing that neutralizing subject and study staff expectations of therapeutic benefit can decrease the placebo response in clinical trials. The results of this study suggest training participants and staff to improve pain reporting accuracy, neutralize expectations, and decrease external cues that may bias participants’ pain ratings in clinical trials may effectively decrease the placebo response leading to increased assay sensitivity. The Concept of Pain Inventory (COPI): Assessing a Child’s Concept of Pain
Discussion: These results support the COPI as a brief, psychometrically sound tool to assess a child’s concept of pain. Clinically, this tool may facilitate individualized pain science education to target identified conceptual “gaps” or misconceptions and to evaluate the effectiveness of pain science education in children. Further research examining its efficacy and impact is warranted. (Source: The Clinical Journal of Pain)

Loss-adjusting: Young People’s Constructions of a Future Living With Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
In this study, 50 adolescents (44 females, 5 males, 1 preferred not to say) aged 14 to 25 years (mean=19.8, SD=3.68), completed an online story completion task, with a further sample of 10 completing a follow-up telephone interview. Results: Story completion data were initially analyzed deductively based on the work of Morley and colleagues using hoped-for and feared-for future codes, revealing higher instances of hope (291 over 48 stories) than fear (99 over 27 stories). These codes were subsequently analyzed alongside the in-depth interview data using inductive thematic analysis, generating 2 themes that represent...

Revisiting Risk-stratified Whiplash-exposed Patients 12 to 14 Years After Injury
Conclusions: Internal and long-term validation of DWGRAS was performed, but a low response rate indicates that results should be interpreted with caution. Furthermore, external validation needs to be done in long-term studies. An receiver operating characteristics curve of 0.73 (95% confidence interval 0.67; 0.79) predicting daily or weekly whiplash-related disability after 12 to 14 years was found using the DWGRAS risk score. Longitudinal Patterns of Pain Reporting Among Community-dwelling Older Adults
The objective of this study was to identify and describe long-term trajectories of bothersome pain and activity-limiting pain in a population-based sample of older adults. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 6783 community-dwelling participants using 6 years of longitudinal data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS). NHATS is a cohort of older adults that is representative of Medicare Beneficiaries aged 65 years and older. NHATS data collection began in 2011, and demographic and health data are collected annually through in-person interviews. Participants were asked ...

High Prevalence of Falls Independent of Age in Adults Living With Chronic Pain
Discussion: A high prevalence of falls was found independent of age for adults with chronic pain. Although the risk of falls may increase with age, lower physical function and more pain sites are better indicators for falls. A better understanding of circumstances and consequences of falls in all adults with chronic pain is warranted. (Source: The Clinical Journal of Pain)

Subgroups of Pediatric Patients With Functional Abdominal Pain: Replication, Parental Characteristics, and Health Service Use
Discussion: Findings replicate and extend the original FAP classification and suggest that the subgroups have unique patient and parent features that may reflect distinct illness mechanisms requiring different treatments. (Source: The Clinical Journal of Pain)

Efficacy of Pulsed Radiofrequency in Herpetic Neuralgia: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
Discussion: PRF safely and effectively reduced pain scores and improved QoL in patients with herpes zoster in the cervical to lumbosacral areas. PRF could be considered during refractory PHN treatment. Future studies require standardized PRF settings and outcome assessment tools, including physical and emotional function assessments. Multidisciplinary-based Rehabilitation (MBR) Compared With Active Physical Interventions for Pain and Disability in Adults With Chronic Pain: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of multidisciplinary-based rehabilitation (MBR) in comparison with active physical interventions for adults with chronic pain. Materials and Methods: The review was conducted in line with the recommendations provided in the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews and is reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A total of 8 electronic databases were searched from inception to November 2018. Only randomized controlled trials were eligible for inclusion. In total, ...

Pain Acceptance Partially Mediates the Relationship Between Perceived Injustice and Pain Outcomes Over 3 Months
Discussion: Although these findings provide further support for pain acceptance as a buffer for the deleterious effects of perceived injustice, they also highlight that adjunctive mechanisms should be investigated to provide more comprehensive clinical insight. Anxiety, Depression, and Opioid Misuse Among Adults With Chronic Pain: The Role of Anxiety Sensitivity
Discussion: Bi-directional effects are apt to be involved among the studied variables. Prospective research is needed to replicate the study results and isolate the temporal patterning between the studied constructs. Nonetheless, the data overall highlight the importance of both AS and anxiety and depressive symptoms in terms of understanding opioid misuse among adults with chronic pain.
