Autologous Blood Patch Pleurodesis for the Management of a Persistent Air Leak after Secondary Spontaneous Pneumothorax
Patients with secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP) complicated by persistent air leak (PAL) and who are poor surgical candidates have limited treatment options. This case series explored autologous blood patch pleurodesis as a possible cost-effective management option. A total of 46 episodes of SSP with PAL were included. The procedure was successful in 33 (71.7%). Of these, 17 (51.5%) resolved within 1 day. The mean duration of intercostal drainage prior to the blood patch was 22 days in the successful group. Pneumothoraces with incomplete lung re-expansion at the time of procedure were successful in 20 of 30 (66.7%)....

Nontuberculous Mycobacteria under Scrutiny in the Geneva Area (2015 –2020)
Conclusions: In Western Switzerland,M. avium andM. gordonae were the most prevalent NTM identified. Positive cultures for NTM led to a specific treatment in 19% of subjects. Patients with a positive culture for NTM were mostly female, with a median age of 62 years, a low BMI, and a low prevalence of immunosuppression or associated severe comorbidities.Respiration (Source: Respiration)

Impact of Ventilation Modes on Bronchoscopic Chartis Assessment Outcome in Candidates for Endobronchial Valve Treatment
Conclusion: Chartis assessment in spontaneous breathing and HF jet ventilation had similar rates in detecting CV in lung emphysema. Our results suggest that both modes are equivalent for the assessment of CV.Respiration (Source: Respiration)

Silent Hypoxia in COVID-19: A Case Series
Conclusion: Among pulmonary patients with acute hypoxemia defined as oxygen demand, patients suffering from COVID-19 experience less dyspnea compared to non-COVID patients. “Silent” hypoxemia was more common in COVID-19 patients.Respiration (Source: Respiration)

Mycobacteriophages to Treat Tuberculosis: Dream or Delusion?
Rates of antimicrobial resistance are increasing globally while the pipeline of new antibiotics is drying up, putting patients with disease caused by drug-resistant bacteria at increased risk of complications and death. The growing costs for diagnosis and management of drug resistance threaten tuberculosis control where the disease is endemic and resources limited. Bacteriophages are viruses that attack bacteria. Phage preparations served as anti-infective agents long before antibiotics were discovered. Though small in size, phages are the most abundant and diverse biological entity on earth. Phages have co-evolved with th...

Effect of Salbutamol on Lung Ventilation in Children with Cystic Fibrosis: Comprehensive Assessment Using Spirometry, Multiple-Breath Washout, and Functional Lung Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Conclusions: There is a positive short-term effect of bronchodilator inhalation on FEV1 in patients with CF, which is independent of ventilation inhomogeneity. Heterogeneous response between patients suggests that for prediction of a therapeutic effect this should be tested by spirometry in every patient individually.Respiration (Source: Respiration)
