Thoracic Ultrasound Strain Elastosonography as a Noninvasive Biomarker of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease-Associated Lung Injury: A Feasibility Study
Conclusion: The measurement of lung-pleura interface stiffness by TSE in posterior basal scans was able to discriminate patients with lung injury from healthy nonsmokers. The role of TSE for detecting early lung damage in COPD should be further investigated.Respiration (Source: Respiration)

Changes in Pulmonary Function Test Results and Respiratory Symptoms before and after Airway Stent Removal
Conclusion: Removal of unnecessary airway stents improves pulmonary function and respiratory symptoms. Any stent that is no longer functioning should be removed.Respiration (Source: Respiration)

Small Airways: Not Just Air Ducts – Pathophysiological Aspects and Clinical Implications
The airways smaller than 2 mm diameter are named small airways. They are essential for the transport and exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide and at the same time play a relevant role in pulmonary mechanics, contributing to the subdivision of lung volumes. Measurement of small airway function is, therefore, crucial in patients with respiratory disease. This overview focuses on the physiological aspects of the small airways, considered as air ducts as well as determinants of pulmonary mechanics, the most common tools for evaluating their function and treatment implications.Respiration (Source: Respiration)

Efficacy of Intrabronchial Voriconazole Instillation for Inoperable Pulmonary Aspergilloma: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial
Conclusions: Our study shows that for nonoperable aspergilloma, bronchoscopic instillation of voriconazole is associated with reduction in the severity of hemoptysis. This therapy should be evaluated in large multi-center trials.Respiration (Source: Respiration)

The Role of Oral Microbiota in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Studies have shown that oral microbiota dysbiosis affects patients ’ lung function, promoting the development and acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In this paper, we review the mechanisms potentially linking COPD with periodontitis. Oral microbiota enters the respiratory system through clinical microaspiration to aggravate lung m icrobiota dysbiosis and induce lung injury by entering the respiratory tract directly. Appropriate interventions for dysbiosis such as periodontal therapy or oral microbial transplantation may prevent the progression of COPD.Respiration (Source: Respiration)

Endoscopic Lung Volume Reduction with One-Way Valves in Patients with Severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease with Hypercapnia
Conclusions: ELVR with one-way valves seems clinically beneficial with a remarkably good safety profile for patients with chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure.Respiration (Source: Respiration)

Ultrasonography in Assessment of Respiratory Muscles Function: A Systematic Review
Conclusion: A strong relationship between US measurements and pulmonary parameters was demonstrated in some studies but not others. This review confirmed that US measurements can complement spirometry, but the exact role of the US remains to be confirmed. Further studies using standardized methodology are needed to obtain more conclusive evidence on the usefulness of US for assessing respiratory function.Respiration (Source: Respiration)

Diagnosing Tuberculosis: What Do New Technologies Allow Us to (Not) Do?
New tuberculosis (TB) diagnostics are at a crossroads: their development, evaluation, and implementation is severely damaged by resource diversion due to COVID-19. Yet several technologies, especially those with potential for non-invasive non-sputum-based testing, hold promise for efficiently triaging and rapidly confirming TB near point-of-care. Such tests are, however, progressing through the pipeline slowly and will take years to reach patients and health workers. Compellingly, such tests will create new opportunities for difficult-to-diagnose populations, including primary care attendees (all-comers in high burden sett...

Home Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Why, Who, and How?
Advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) might result in chronic hypercapnic ventilatory failure. Similar to neuromuscular and restrictive chest wall diseases, long-term non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) is increasingly used in chronic hypercapnic COPD. This review describes the methods, patient selection, ventilatory strategies, and therapeutic effects of long-term Home-NPPV based on randomized controlled clinical trials published since 1985 in English language retrieved from the databases PubMed and Scopus. Long-term NPPV is feasible and effective in stable, non-exacerbated COPD patients with...

Does the Addition of Radial Endobronchial Ultrasound Improve the Diagnostic Yield of Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy? A Systematic Review
Conclusion: As the current evidence on the topic is sparse and heterogeneous, it is not possible to conclude whether the addition of rEBUS to ENB has a significant impact on diagnostic yield. Further studies are needed to illuminate this question in order to ensure optimal choice of endoscopic technique as well as used time and resources. The project received funding from the Region of Southern Denmark ’s PhD fund.Respiration (Source: Respiration)

Reversibility of Hypercapnia after an Acute Exacerbation of COPD
Conclusions: A large percentage of patients has prolonged hypercapnia following acute hypercapnic COPD exacerbation. The risk profile of patients with irreversible hypercapnia should be carefully evaluated following AECOPD in order to choose selected patients for home-noninvasive ventilation.Respiration (Source: Respiration)
