Application of the Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey in Oculomotor Dysfunction and Accommodative Insufficiency
CONCLUSIONS Children with OMD (Developmental Eye Movement type II or IV) had higher CISS scores than ones with NBV. Using the CISS, children with AI did not report worse symptoms than children with NBV. (Source: Optometry and Vision Science)

Validation of the International Reading Speed Texts in a Sample of Older (60+) Canadian Adults
CONCLUSIONS Reading speeds of older (60+) Canadian adults fell outside of the standardized values of the English language IReST. Researchers/clinicians who wish to assess older adults' reading speed using the IReST ought to take this discrepancy into account. (Source: Optometry and Vision Science)

Environmental and Behavioral Factors with Refractive Error in Israeli Boys
This study aimed to assess factors that may influence myopia in three groups of Jewish boys with different educational demands. METHODS Healthy ultra-Orthodox, religious, and secular Jewish boys (n = 36) aged 8 to 12 years participated. Refractive status, education, time spent reading and writing, and electronic device use were assessed using a questionnaire, and time outdoors and physical activity were assessed objectively using an Actiwatch. Data were analyzed with χ2 and Kruskal-Wallis tests with Bonferroni post hoc comparisons. RESULTS Ultra-Orthodox (n = 14) and religious (n = 13) children had greater m...

Image Size and the Range of Clear and Single Binocular Vision in 3D Displays
In this study, we tested a hypothesis for this difference. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to determine whether changing fixation target size in 3D viewing significantly affects the vergence ranges and, if so, then to determine whether the target size effect is driven by fusional vergence gain changes, threshold of blur changes, or both. METHODS Twenty-one visually normal adults aged 18 to 28 years viewed 3D images at 40 cm in an electronic stereoscopic. The fixation target, a Maltese cross, moved in depth at 2∆/s by way of changing crossed or uncrossed disparity until blur and diplopia ensued. We use...

Challenges in Reading Arabic among Children with Dyslexia
This study aimed to (1) measure reading performance in children with dyslexia by acuity level and (2) conduct an indirect comparison between the effects of dyslexia on Arabic versus English readers. METHODS Twenty children aged 9 to 12 years with dyslexia and 30 controls aged 9 to 11 years were included in the study. Reading performance was evaluated using maximum reading speed, reading acuity, and critical print size (CPS). Two Arabic charts, the Balsam Alabdulkader–Leat chart and the International Reading Speed Texts chart, were used to evaluate reading performance. The number of errors was calculated and plotte...

Accuracy of Noncycloplegic Refraction for Detecting Refractive Errors in School-aged African Children
CONCLUSIONS Noncycloplegic refraction may accurately detect astigmatism and myopia in this population but may elicit higher myopic values and lower hyperopic values than using cycloplegic refraction. (Source: Optometry and Vision Science)

Visual Performance as a Function of Clear Central Aperture Diameter with a Defocused Myopic Periphery
SIGNIFICANCE Visual performance is affected least by a 15° radial aperture surrounded by peripheral myopic defocus. This finding has important applications for spectacle and contact lens designs and myopia control optimization. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of clear central apertures of different diameters with a defocused retinal periphery, using a range of visual performance tasks. METHODS Thirty visually normal subjects (mean age, 24.4 ± 3.3 years; 20 females; mean spherical equivalent of −1.28 D) were enrolled. Subjects wore five different spectacles during testing, al...

Clinical Trial: Diurnal IOP Fluctuations in Glaucoma Using Latanoprost and Timolol with Self-Tonometry
CONCLUSIONS Despite variability in IOP responses to latanoprost and timolol, IOP fluctuation with self-tonometry was more consistent in evaluating target IOP, reflecting its importance in ascertaining true IOP response to topical therapies. These findings may impact clinical decision making based on target IOP criteria in patients on topical therapy. (Source: Optometry and Vision Science)

Photophobia Associated with Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
This study reports the prevalence and relative risk of photophobia in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). OBJECTIVES This study aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the prevalence and relative risk of photophobia in patients with TBI. DATA SOURCES Three databases were used for literature search: PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library. STUDY APPRAISAL AND SYNTHESIS METHODS Publications reporting the prevalence of photophobia after TBI in patients of any age were included. A series of meta-regression analyses based on a generalized linear mixed model was performed to ...

Case Report: Significant Complications of Cosmetic Iris Implantation
CONCLUSIONS This case emphasizes the vision-threatening dangers of cosmetic iris implantation. It also demonstrates that sequelae may persist and develop despite implant removal and anticipatory management. Providers managing similar patients should carefully monitor for disease progression and maintain a low threshold for referral and/or decisive surgical intervention. Case Report: Subconjunctival Bevacizumab for the Treatment of Refractory Pseudophakic Cystoid Macular Edema
CONCLUSIONS The repeated subconjunctival injections of bevacizumab were effective and well tolerated in pseudophakic cystoid macular edema. Subconjunctival bevacizumab may be a safe alternative to intravitreal applications in patients with pseudophakic cystoid macular edema. (Source: Optometry and Vision Science)

Case Report: Bilateral Ciliary Body Detachment in a Patient Taking Oral Diet Pills
CONCLUSIONS Extensive publicity and education are needed to ensure that consumers do not abuse diet pills; meanwhile, a timely diagnosis and withdrawal are crucial for a desirable prognosis. Clinicians need to consider the possibility of drug-secondary ocular diseases. (Source: Optometry and Vision Science)

Case Report: Use of Multimodal Imaging to Document a Rare Complication of Torpedo Maculopathy
CONCLUSIONS Although torpedo maculopathy is often a benign diagnosis, complications such as choroidal neovascular membrane can occur. Choroidal neovascular membrane formation is well documented in younger patients with torpedo maculopathy; however, we present a rare case of choroidal neovascular membrane in an elderly individual. Multimodal imaging proved instrumental in the early detection and management of this infrequently reported complication. (Source: Optometry and Vision Science)

Case Report: Steroid-induced Ocular Hypertension in a 6-year-old Boy
CONCLUSIONS This case reminds eye care providers to be aware of the potential ocular hypertensive response to systemic steroid treatment and the importance of establishing early monitoring. With the emergence of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children during the current COVID-19 pandemic, eye care providers may encounter more pediatric patients on systemic corticosteroid treatment than previously and should adjust their examinations appropriately.
