Case Report: Peripheral Retinal Ischemia and Retinal Neovascularization in von Willebrand Disease
CONCLUSIONS This case described a new finding of peripheral retinal ischemia and retinal neovascularization in von Willebrand disease. It was discovered in an asymptomatic patient who did not have a history of bleeding but presented with bilateral retinal hemorrhages. Diagnosis was challenging because of the high degree of variation in this bleeding disorder, requiring extensive testing and careful consideration of the individual's clinical profile. Most people with von Willebrand disease do not know they have the disease because symptoms are mild or absent, so most cases are unreported. The von Willebrand factor is po...

Case Report: Idiopathic Sclerosing Orbital Inflammation
CONCLUSIONS Idiopathic sclerosing orbital inflammation is difficult to diagnose and manage. No large studies exist because of the rare nature of the disease. Slowly progressive, nonspecific signs and symptoms may delay recognition and treatment. Orbital imaging and histopathologic analysis are critical for definitive diagnosis. Conventional treatment with corticosteroids is not uniformly successful, but newer combined therapy options can improve outcomes. Early identification and treatment are key to management and ultimate preservation of function and vision. (Source: Optometry and Vision Science)

Case Report: Double Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segment and Posterior Chamber Phakic Intraocular Lens Implantation
CONCLUSIONS In a patient with keratoconus, refractive surgery should be performed from a bilateral perspective. Specific cases of keratoconus can be managed by parallel implantation of a second ICRS. (Source: Optometry and Vision Science)

Contrast Sensitivity on 1/f Noise Is More Greatly Impacted by Older Age for the Fovea Than Parafovea
CONCLUSIONS Our results revealed a strong eccentricity dependence in performance between older and younger adults, highlighting age-related differences in the contrast detection mechanisms between fovea and parafovea for stimuli presented on nonuniform backgrounds. Near-point Findings in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and in Typical Peers
SIGNIFICANCE Clinicians can better diagnose and manage vision problems of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) children by establishing a standard of care for this population. Results also reinforce the importance of a comprehensive binocular vision evaluation in all patients with ASD. PURPOSE The purposes of this study were to compare near-point and ocular motility test findings in ASD children and typically developing (TD) peers and to compare findings among ASD children by level of verbal communication. METHODS Sixty-one children and adolescents (ASD, 34; TD, 27) aged 9 to 17 years completed an eye examinati...

A Novel Stimulus to Improve Perimetric Sampling within the Macula in Patients with Glaucoma
CONCLUSIONS The elongated stimulus showed a good structure-function agreement with only four testing locations as compared with 68 locations used with the blob stimulus. This demonstrates a clinical potential for this new stimulus in the next generation of perimetry. (Source: Optometry and Vision Science)

Corneal Biomechanical Changes Caused by Acute Elevation of IOP in Eyes with and without Glaucoma
CONCLUSIONS Ophthalmodynamometry-induced IOP elevation resulted in significant acute changes in CH and CRF in this study; this suggests accounting for IOP may be important in clinical interpretation of these parameters. However, because the degree of CH change was not related to glaucoma or its progression, acute changes in CH and CRF do not seem to have a prognostic value for glaucoma. Visual and Ocular Conditions among a Homeless Adult Population of Boston
CONCLUSIONS A significant need for refractive correction and a large gap for ophthalmological care were found among the study population. Health care for the homeless programs and eye care practitioners should be aware of the visual and ocular needs of this patient population so as to better meet their needs. Evaluation of Online Information on Complementary and Alternative Treatments for Dry Eye Disease
CONCLUSIONS The majority of analyzed Web sites were of satisfactory quality with a low potential risk to patients. However, some Web sites were biased toward their own therapies, lacked proper referencing, and/or did not identify authorship. Further research is required to ascertain the efficacy and safety of these therapies. (Source: Optometry and Vision Science)

Effect of Laser-assisted Subepithelial Keratectomy with Mitomycin C on Corneal Optical Density Measured with Confocal Microscopy
SIGNIFICANCE The development of confocal microscopy allows one to obtain high-resolution corneal images like its optical density. Some studies have evaluated the optical density with Scheimpflug cameras in the early post-operative period after photorefractive keratectomy, but no studies have evaluated the long-term evolution of optical density after surface ablation when mitomycin C is used. PURPOSE This work aimed to study the changes in corneal optical density measured with confocal microscopy in eyes treated with laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy (LASEK) and intraoperative mitomycin C (MMC) to correct ...

The Impact of Incubation Conditions on In Vitro Phosphatidylcholine Deposition on Contact Lens Materials
This study evaluated the impact of incubation time, lipid concentration, and replenishment of an artificial tear solution (ATS) on the uptake of phosphatidylcholine (PC) onto conventional hydrogel (CH) and silicone hydrogel (SH) contact lens materials. METHODS Four SHs and two CH lens materials (n = 4) were soaked in a complex ATS containing radioactive 14C-PC as a probe molecule. Phosphatidylcholine uptake was monitored at various incubation time points (1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days), with different ATS lipid concentrations (0.5×, 1×, 2×) and with and without regular replenishment of the ATS. Phosphatidylcholine was...

Low Vision and Dry Eye: Does One Diagnosis Overshadow the Other?
CONCLUSIONS Low vision patients have multiple risk factors for dry eye disease; however, dry eye disease tests were not frequently performed in comprehensive low vision eye examinations in this sample. More efforts should be made to assess dry eye disease to enhance comfort and functional vision, especially with the increasing demands of digital devices as visual aids. Analysis of the Peripapillary Choroidal Vascular Characteristics in Papilledema Associated with Pseudotumor Cerebri
SIGNIFICANCE Choroidal vascularity index measured by image binarization method from peripapillary optical coherence tomography sections has been found significantly lower in papilledema patients than healthy controls. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to compare peripapillary choroidal parameters in papilledema patients with control subjects. METHODS Peripapillary spectral domain optical coherence tomography scans of 34 patients with papilledema and 34 healthy controls are acquired for the study. Images are binarized with the ImageJ software (National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD) to calculate t...
