Prevalence of Childhood Obesity in the United States in 1999 –2018: A 20-Year Analysis
Conclusion: The prevalence of childhood obesity kept increasing in 1999 –2018. The problem is worse in children from Spanish-speaking households. Novel and targeted public health intervention strategies are urgently warranted to effectively halt the rising epidemic of childhood obesity. (Source: Obesity Facts)

Integrin αV Mediates the Effects of Irisin on Human Mature Adipocytes
Conclusion: The results of the present study indicated that irisin contributed to the transformation of mature white adipocytes to beige adipocytes in human subcutaneous adipose tissue but not in visceral adipose tissue. Integrin αV may mediate the browning effects of irisin on human mature adipocytes, which could provide the potential therapeutic targets for obesity and metabolic syndrome by promoting human brown adipose tissue activity. The Effect and Mechanism of Duodenal-Jejunal Bypass to Treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in a Rat Model
Conclusions: DJB can be used to treat T2DM in T2DM rats. The mechanism may be that the DJB stimulates the increased expression of GLP-1 on the far side of the ileum, and then, GLP-1 inhibits ERS in the pancreas, reducing the apoptosis of β cells to create a treatment effect in the T2DM rats.Obes Facts (Source: Obesity Facts)

Relationship between birth weight, early growth rate and body composition in 5 to 7-year-old children
Background: Programming of body composition during intrauterine growth may contribute to the higher risk for cardio-metabolic disease in individuals born small or large for gestational age (SGA, LGA). Compensations of intrauterine growth by catch-up or catch-down postnatal growth may lead to adverse consequences like a thin-fat phenotype. Methods: The impact of (i) birth weight as well as (ii) the interaction between birth weight and catch-up or catch-down growth during the first two years of life on fat free mass index (FFMI) and fat mass index (FMI) in 3204 5-7-year-old children was investigated using Hattori`s body com...

Autism Spectrum Disorder and Obesity in Children: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusion: Children and adolescents with ASD have a higher prevalence of obesity than healthy controls. There is a need for further prevalence studies of obesity in children with ASD, especially outside the USA, since the few European studies carried out have failed to show a significant difference between obesity prevalence in children with and without ASD. There is no knowledge at all regarding the prevalence of ASD among children with obesity.Obes Facts (Source: Obesity Facts)

Rates, Variability, and Predictors of Screening for Obesity: Are Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury Being Overlooked?
Introduction: Individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) are vulnerable to obesity. Annual obesity screening using body mass index (BMI) is standard of care mandated by U.S. Veterans Health Administration (VHA) guidelines. Our objective is to determine the rates, variability, and predictors of guideline-concordant annual screening for obesity, given potential challenges of height and weight measurements in individuals with SCI. Methods: This is a cross-sectional retrospective study using U.S. national VA databases. We identified all VHA patients with chronic SCI in fiscal year (FY) 2019, their treating facility, and frequ...

Obesity in Older Adults and Associations with Cardiovascular Structure and Function
Introduction: Body mass index (BMI), despite being widely used as a marker of obesity, fails to fully capture cardiovascular risks as it is an insufficient biomarker of abdominal adiposity, unlike waist circumference (WC). We aim to characterize associations between BMI and WC with cardiovascular structure and function in older adults. Methods: Among an observational cohort study of community older adults, transthoracic echocardiography determined cardiovascular structure and function, while aerobic capacity was determined by peak oxygen uptake (VO2) metrics. The cut-offs for obesity were 27.5kg/m2 for BMI, and>90cm for...

Definition and Diagnostic Criteria for Sarcopenic Obesity: ESPEN and EASO Consensus Statement
Conclusions: ESPEN and EASO, as well as the expert international panel, advocate that the proposed SO definition and diagnostic criteria be implemented into routine clinical practice. The panel also encourages prospective studies in addition to secondary analysis of existing data sets, to study the predictive value, treatment efficacy and clinical impact of this SO definition.Obes Facts (Source: Obesity Facts)

Relationship between obstetric mode of delivery and risk of overweight/obesity from 1 to 4 years children
Background: Childhood obesity is an important public health problem, which may lead to increase risk of obesity in adulthood. The relationship between the incidence of obesity and the mode of delivery is not clear. Cesarean section (CS) may be one of the risk factors of obesity in children. We investigated the relationship between the mode of delivery of pregnant women and the risk of overweight/obesity in children of all ages from 1 to 4 years. Methods: Registered in the maternal and child registration system of Xiamen ci ty, newborns born between January 2011 and December 2012 were followed up to 4 years old. Results...
