The European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) Endorses the Milan Charter on Urban Obesity
The Milan Charter on Urban Obesity highlights the challenges of urban environments as a battleground for human health, as cities are often organized to subvert public health goals, and promote rather than prevent the development of obesity and consequent non-communicable diseases. The Charter articulates ten principles which detail actions and strategies through which general practitioners, diverse medical specialists, related healthcare professionals, administrators and healthcare practice managers, policy actors – within health systems and at a national level – along with experts across disciplines, and citizens, can...

Weight Status and BMI-Related Traits in Adolescent Friendship Groups and Role of Sociodemographic Factors: The European IDEFICS/I.Family Cohort
Conclusion: Adolescent friends shared a number of weight-related characteristics. For weight measures per se, positive associations with friends ’ characteristics were only observed in adolescents with high parental education. Associations regarding energy-balance behaviors and indicators of school-related well-being did not differ by parental education. Parental education and immigrant background correlated positively in friends in most c ountries showing that social aggregation is already occurring in adolescence. The wide spectrum of friendship associations in weight-related traits and behaviors suggests that health p...

Physical Activity, Screen Time, and Sleep Duration of Children Aged 6 –9 Years in 25 Countries: An Analysis within the WHO European Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative (COSI) 2015–2017
Conclusions: The prevalence of engagement in PA and the achievement of healthy screen time and sleep duration are heterogenous across the region. Policymakers and other stakeholders, including school administrators and parents, should increase opportunities for young people to participate in daily PA as well as explore solutions to address excessive screen time and short sleep duration to improve the overall physical and mental health and well-being of children.Obes Facts (Source: Obesity Facts)

Individual Physical Activity Behaviour and Group Composition as Determinants of the Effectiveness of a Childhood Obesity Intervention Program
Conclusions: The program under review is effective in counteracting juvenile obesity. The results give reason to believe that forming mixed-gender groups with a small age range and providing increased support for reportedly inactive children may improve program effectiveness.Obes Facts (Source: Obesity Facts)

Gender Differences in Factors Associated with Clinically Meaningful Weight Loss among Adults Who Were Overweight or Obese: A Population-Based Cohort Study
Conclusion: Age, BMI status, physical activity, smoking status, family income, and health status were independent factors in males and females for weight management. However, further well-designed prospective studies are warranted to confirm our findings.Obes Facts (Source: Obesity Facts)

Hepatic Steatosis Is Associated with Elevated Serum Iron in Patients with Obesity and Improves after Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
Conclusions: Overall, our results indicated that iron is associated with hepatic steatosis in obesity. The iron level was significantly higher in patients with severe NAFLD than with mild or moderate NAFLD. LSG may reduce iron levels while improving fat deposition in the liver.Obes Facts (Source: Obesity Facts)

Potential Role of Hypothalamic and Plasma Ghrelin in the Feeding Behavior of Obese Type 2 Diabetic Rats with Intraventricular Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonist Intervention
Conclusions: In a GLP-1 receptor-dependent manner, central and peripheral ghrelin play a vital role in the inhibition of feeding by Ex-4 administration. Hypothalamic ghrelin, but not plasma ghrelin, may be involved in central Ex-4 inhibition of feeding in the very early feeding period.Obes Facts (Source: Obesity Facts)

Long-Term Effects of Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass on Body Composition and Bone Mass Density
Conclusions:At 6.7 years after surgery, no difference in body composition and BMD between LRYGB and LSG was found. Deficiencies and bone loss remain an issue after both interventions and should be monitored.Obes Facts (Source: Obesity Facts)

Bariatric Surgery Impact on Cardiovascular Risk Factors: Is Age a Factor to Consider?
Conclusion: Patients with ≥60 years benefit the most from bariatric surgery regarding cardiometabolic parameters, presenting heavier reductions in fasting glucose, as well as HbA1c and a tendency towards a higher decrease in systolic blood pressure. No clinically significant differences in lipid profile were observed betwe en groups.Obes Facts (Source: Obesity Facts)

Family and Lifestyle Factors Mediate the Relationship between Socioeconomic Status and Fat Mass in Children and Adolescents
Socioeconomic status (SES) is strongly associated with childhood overweight. The underlying mechanism and the role of family and lifestyle factors as potential mediators of this relationship remain, however, unclear. Cross-sectional data of 4,772 girls and boys aged 5 –16 years from the Kiel Obesity Prevention Study were considered in mediation analyses. Fat mass (FM) was assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis and converted into a percent FM SD score (FM%-SDS). SES was defined by the parental educational level, classified as low, middle, or high. Characte ristics of family and lifestyle factors were obtained via va...

Validation of a Three-Item Short Form of the Modified Weight Bias Internalization Scale (WBIS-3) in the German Population
Conclusions: The WBIS-3 constitutes a valid and economical tool for the assessment of weight bias internalization in epidemiological contexts. Measurement invariance allows for an unbiased comparison of means, correlation coefficients, and path coefficients within structural equation modeling across groups.Obes Facts (Source: Obesity Facts)

Prevalence and Related Factors of Metabolic Syndrome in Beijing, China (Year 2017)
Conclusions: The prevalence of MetS is still in a rising trend in Beijing. Strategies aimed at prevention and control of high BP should be prioritized to reduce the occurrence of MetS. WHtR is more important to evaluate MetS. Health education and personalized lifestyle intervention should be promoted to keep a healthy WHtR and waist circumference. An appropriate sleep time should be kept, and harmful alcohol drinkers should limit or abstain from alcohol.Obes Facts (Source: Obesity Facts)

First-Phase Insulin and Amylin after Bariatric Surgery: A Prospective Randomized Trial on Patients with Insulin Resistance or Diabetes after Gastric Bypass or Sleeve Gastrectomy
Conclusion: Intravenous glucose and arginine administrations show no pre- to postoperative changes of insulin release, amylin, glucagon, or C-peptide concentrations, and no differences between LRYGB and LSG were found. The postoperative improvement in glycemic control is not caused by changes in endocrine pancreatic hormone secretion.Obes Facts (Source: Obesity Facts)
