The 5' untranslated region variant rs3811050 C/T of the interleukin-38 encoding gene is associated with susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis in Iraqi women
CONCLUSIONS: The rs3811050 variant was more likely to affect RA susceptibility in Iraqi women, and the T allele may play a role in reducing disease risk. IL-38 concentrations were elevated in RA patients, but were not affected by the rs3811050 and rs3811051 genotypes.PMID:38683405 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09529-y (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

Assessing the possible association between MTHFR (rs1801133) and GPx-1 (rs1050450) polymorphisms with the risk of type 2 diabetes, diabetic neuropathy, and diabetic retinopathy
CONCLUSION: The MTHFR TT genotype increased the risk of neuropathy in diabetic patients significantly. The GPx-1 CT genotype is related to increased retinopathy risk among diabetic patients. Both MTHFR and Gpx-1 TT genotypes were associated with higher BMI levels.PMID:38683407 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09519-0 (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

From swamp to field: how genes from mangroves and its associates can enhance crop salinity tolerance
Mol Biol Rep. 2024 Apr 29;51(1):598. doi: 10.1007/s11033-024-09539-w.ABSTRACTSalinity stress is a critical challenge in crop production and requires innovative strategies to enhance the salt tolerance of plants. Insights from mangrove species, which are renowned for their adaptability to high-salinity environments, provides valuable genetic targets and resources for improving crops. A significant hurdle in salinity stress is the excessive uptake of sodium ions (Na+) by plant roots, causing disruptions in cellular balance, nutrient deficiencies, and hampered growth. Specific ion transporters and channels play crucial roles ...

In vitro anti-leukemic effect of Wharton's jelly derived mesenchymal stem cells
CONCLUSIONS: MSCs are known to inhibit the growth of tumors of both hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic origin in vitro. In our study, WJ-MSC treatment strongly inhibited the viability of HL-60 and K562 and induced apoptosis. Our results also provided new insights into the inhibition of tumor growth by WJ-MSCs in vitro. In the future, WJ-MSCs could be used to inhibit cancer cells in clinical applications.PMID:38683436 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09512-7 (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

Interplay between α-synuclein and parkin genes: Insights of Parkinson's disease
Mol Biol Rep. 2024 Apr 29;51(1):586. doi: 10.1007/s11033-024-09520-7.ABSTRACTParkinson's disease (PD) is a complex and debilitating neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. The pathogenesis of PD is intimately linked to the roles of two key molecular players, α-synuclein (α-syn) and Parkin. Understanding the intricate interplay between α-syn and Parkin is essential for unravelling the molecular underpinnings of PD. Their roles in synaptic function and protein quality control underscore their significance in neuronal health. Dysregulation of these p...
