Self-Determination of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review
We examined the thematic categories of research studies, rigor of research, and influential factors. Among the 18 included studies, three distinct thematic categories were identified: (a) intervention research, (b) stakeholders ’ perceptions, and (c) contextual analysis. Intervention articles were the most prevalent, followed by articles that reported stakeholders’ perceptions. Contextual analysis articles were less common. Several factors have been identified that influence student self-determination (e.g. age, gender , hours spent with peers, educational placement). This review suggests that self-determination of stu...

Behavioral Treatment of Problem Behavior for an Adult with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Misophonia
AbstractMisophonia is characterized by an autonomic response (e.g., increased heart rate) that is elicited by certain innocuous or repetitive sounds, and individuals with misophonia may display an extreme, overt response commonly associated with rage, hatred, and a loss of self-control. In this investigation, we used a combined respondent and operant approach to treat problem behavior evoked by bodily sounds (i.e., coughing, sneezing, sniffling, and clearing throat) for an adult with autism spectrum disorder. The intervention produced immediate reductions of problem behavior and the effects of treatment maintained during p...

Step-Instruction Technology to Help People with Intellectual and Other Disabilities Perform Multistep Tasks: a Literature Review
AbstractOne of the main objectives for people with intellectual disability (with or without other disabilities) is the ability to perform multistep activities (e.g. preparing a sandwich) without external help from a caregiver. This paper provides a review of studies that evaluated technology systems to teach or support people with intellectual and other disabilities to carry out multistep functional activities through the presentation of single-step instructions. A literature search was performed for English language articles indexed in PubMed, PsycINFO and Web of Science. A narrative synthesis of the articles selected was...

Examining the Convergent Validity Between the PEAK Relational Training System ’s Semi-Standardized and Standardized Skill Assessments
AbstractThe current study examined the convergent validity between the standardized PEAK Comprehensive Assessment (PCA) and the semi-standardized PEAK Pre-assessment (PEAK-PA). Twenty-two participants were administered each tool, and an item by item analysis was conducted to evaluate correlations between tests. The results suggested a strong positive correlation between the PEAK-PA and the PCA score (r = .967,p <  .0001). Correlations between each subtest on the PCA and the PEAK-PA were all significant at .001 level. When looking at revised items on the PCA, individuals most often scored higher on the PEAK-PA th...

Manual-Based Group Intervention for Siblings and Parents of Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders in Cambodia
We examined initial outcomes and feasibility of a manual-based intervention for siblings and parents of children with ND, called SIBS, delivered in Cambodia. SIBS has promising evidence from an open trial in Norway. We delivered eight groups for 52 siblings (M age  = 12.7 years,SD = 2.7; 44.0% female) and 56 caregivers (M age  = 43.5 years,SD = 8.5; 61.1% mothers) of 54 children with ND at the only public child mental health clinic in Cambodia. We aimed to improve sibling and parent mental health and family communication. The SIBS intervention comprises three separate sibling/parent group sessions and two...

Foundational Reading Interventions Adapted for Individuals Who Require Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC): a Systematic Review of the Research
AbstractThe acquisition of reading skills is vital for all individuals given the ubiquitous influence of reading on academic outcomes and quality of life. Individuals with complex communication needs, requiring the supports of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), are often excluded from learning phonological approaches to literacy. Most literacy approaches require verbal production of speech sounds —which is particularly difficult for individuals with complex communication needs. However, despite challenges with spoken production of sounds, research has reported positive outcomes in participation in phonolog...

A Placebo-Controlled Pilot Exploration of Cholesterol Supplementation for Autistic Symptoms in Children with Low Cholesterol
AbstractThis pilot placebo-controlled trial (NCT00965068, 07/28/2009) explored effects of cholesterol supplementation on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptoms in children with abnormally low cholesterol. Fifteen children age 4 –12 with ASD and cholesterol<5th percentile for age/sex were randomized to 225  mg cholesterol vs. matched placebo twice daily for 12 weeks, followed by 12-week open extension. The cholesterol daily dose approximated the amount in two eggs. Measures included the Ohio Autism Clinical Impression Scale (OACIS, primary outcome), and Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT-4). Effe ct sizes were em...

The Effects of Inattention/Impulsivity and Aggression on the Development of Toddlers with Autism Spectrum Disorder
This study compared four groups consisting of 29 toddlers each: without inattention/impulsivity or aggressive behaviors (i.e., -I/-A), with inattention/impulsivity but without aggressive behaviors (i.e.,  + I/-A), without inattention/impulsivity but with aggressive behaviors (i.e., –I/ + A), and with both inattention/impulsivity and aggressive behaviors (i.e., + I/ + A). The results of the current study revealed significant group differences in Personal-Social, Communication, Motor , and Cognitive domains of theBDI-2. The significance and implications of the present study are discussed. (Source: Journal o...

Promoting Object Manipulation and Reducing Tongue Protrusion in Seven Children with Angelman Syndrome and Developmental Disabilities through Microswitch-Cluster Technology: a Research Extension
AbstractWe further extended the use of a microswitch-cluster technology to promote object manipulation and to reduce tongue protrusion in seven children with Angelman syndrome. Study I included seven participants with severe to profound developmental disabilities. An ABB1AB1 experimental sequence was implemented. During the baselines (i.e., A phases) the technology was available but inactive. During the intervention (i.e., B phase) the adaptive responding was positively reinforced irrespective of the challenging behavior. During the cluster (i.e., B1 phases) the adaptive responding was contingently reinforced only if it oc...

Behavioral Safety Assessment and Intervention among Residential Care Providers of Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
AbstractMany persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities are at risk for injury and physical harm due to unsafe environmental conditions. The present study addressed safety practices among care providers responsible for preventing access to hazardous materials among residential students living in two group homes. In a multiple baseline across settings design, the care providers were first exposed to visual cues intended to prompt access-prevention followed by visual cuing combined with graphic feedback. Care providers in one of the group homes demonstrated a high level of safety practices during baseline which...

The initial psychometric properties for the Total Body Developmental Sequences for youth with visual impairments
AbstractYouth with visual impairments often show difficulties with gross motor skills regardless of age or sex. Gross motor skills support positive developmental trajectories for health warranting the need for assessment. The Total Body Developmental Sequences (TBDS) are fast, easy-to-use, indices of gross motor development with relatively unknown psychometric properties for youth with visual impairments. The primary purpose of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the TBDS with a secondary purpose to evaluate differential effects of biological sex, age, and degree of vision on gross motor skills. Youth w...

The Contribution of General Cognitive Abilities and Specific Numerical Abilities to Mathematics Achievement in Students Who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing
We examined whether general cognitive abilities (i.e. nonverbal IQ, processing speed, and spatial ability) and specific numerical abilities (i.e. symbolic and non-symbolic numerical magnitude processing) are related to mathematics achievement in 198 d/Dhh students in Grades 3 to 9. The results of our regression models indicated that, the three general cognitive abilities independently explained the variance in mathematics achievement when entered in one step; and spatial ability and processing speed had an independent contribution to mathematics achievement in the presence of the specific numerical abilities. The specific ...

Training Direct Service Personnel in Functional Communication Training with Adults with Disabilities
AbstractAdults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) may engage in challenging behavior. These behaviors present challenges to support staff who often lack training in effective behavior management procedures. Behavioral skills training (BST) is an empirically supported method of staff training and has been used to teach support staff a number of intervention skills. The purpose of this study was to extend the literature on BST and to examine the effects of BST on staff implementation of functional communication training (FCT) for three adults with IDD using a non-concurrent multiple baseline design. Resul...
