A Scoping Review and Appraisal of AAC Research in Inclusive School Settings
AbstractThe aim of this scoping review was to explore the extent to which AAC studies have occurred in inclusive versus segregated settings, the role of AAC in inclusive setting studies, and the evidence for AAC supporting inclusive education of students with complex communication needs. A scoping review of studies published from 2000 to 2020 that involved students who used or could benefit from AAC or their peers conducted within schools yielded 167 studies. Relatively few studies (n=28, 17%) were conducted in inclusive settings. Data from these 28 studies were extracted and appraised for quality. AAC was integrated into ...

A Systematic Review of Abduction Prevention Research for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
AbstractWhile abduction remains a rare occurrence in the United States, many parents and caregivers have concerns about children ’s reactions to strangers and other safety-related behaviors. Abduction is a risk for all children, but may be of specific concern for people with disabilities due to social skill and communication deficits. Behavior analytic interventions can be used to address skill deficits that may leave child ren with disabilities vulnerable. Systematic searches of electronic databases, forward, and ancestral searches were conducted to find available research on interventions that address abduction-prevent...

Caregivers with Learning Differences: A Scoping Review and Stakeholder-Engaged Process to Identify Screening Tools for Maternal and Early Childhood Home Visiting Programs
AbstractEvidence-based maternal and early childhood home visiting (EBHV) may support health and well-being among families headed by a caregiver with an intellectual disability or other learning difference. Little is known about tools EBHV staff can use to identify caregivers with learning differences and inform service delivery strategies. Investigators used a two-step stakeholder-engaged approach to identify screening tools that are feasible, acceptable, and useful in the EBHV context. In the first step, authors conducted a scoping review to identify validated screening tools. Data describing the studies and tools were ex...

COVID-19 and Physical Activity Behaviour in People with Neurological Diseases: A Systematic Review
AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic has led to a radical lifestyle change, which may unintendedly change physical activity levels. We aimed to perform a systematic review to investigate the physical activity changes in people with neurological diseases, and to examine the relationship between physical activity and disease symptoms, and psychosocial factors. The review was performed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. A systematic search of the literature across five databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, SCOPUS, and Cochrane Library) was carried out us...

Associations Between Mildly Impaired Autistic Boys ’ and Girls’ Challenging Behaviour and Parental Anxiety and Depression
AbstractTo investigate the contribution made by autistic children ’s Challenging Behaviour (CB) to their parents’ anxiety and depression, parents of 32 autistic boys and 32 autistic girls (aged 6 to 18 years) completed standardised instruments on their children ’s behaviour and their own anxiety and depression. Significant associations were found between the children’s CB and their parents’ anxiety and depression, but the patterns of those associations differed according to the sex of the child. At the individual CB level, boys’ change of mood, but girls’ social isolation, were most powerfully associated wit...

Development and Pilot Testing of the Social Competence Observation Scale (SCOS) for Children with ASD
AbstractThe Social Competence Observation Scale (SCOS) is an objective observational measure developed to assess the social performance of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This paper describes development of the SCOS and results of initial testing of reliability and treatment sensitivity for a sample of 12 children, ages 4 –6 years, with ASD. Based on observations, the measure can yield three scores including a social impairment severity, change, and responder status score. Results suggested good-to-excellent reliability (inter-observer agreement and test–retest) and the SCOS was treatment sensitive to ch...

Adaptive Behavior Function in Autism: Association with ADHD and ASD Symptoms
This study measured adaptive functioning in a sample of 92 children with ASD, including 80 children with co-occurring ADHD. Regression models examined whether ASD and ADHD symptom severity were associated with adaptive functioning level relative to same-age peers (standard scores). ASD severity predicted weaker overall adaptive functioning, relative to peers; ASD and ADHD severity each independently predicted weaker adaptive function in Socialization. Thus, severity of ADHD in children with ASD is associated with greater adaptive deficits than what would be expected on the basis of ASD severity alone. In contrast, ADHD was...

Stigma and Adults with Tourette ’s Syndrome: “Never Laugh at Other People’s Disabilities, Unless they have Tourette’s—Because How Can You Not?”
AbstractTourette ’s syndrome (TS) is a condition that has been stigmatised and mocked in contemporary society, yet little is known about the subjective experience of those directly affected by it. Guided by Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) a mixed method design was used for this study to explore the experience of stigma in adults living with TS in the UK. A total of one hundred and ninety-nine adults participated in a cross-sectional online survey using an adapted version of the Discrimination and Stigma Scale (DISC-12) and the Perceived Quality of Life (PQoL) scale, twenty of whom were also interviewed using a semi-...

CLEAR Autism Diagnostic Evaluation (CADE): Evaluation of Reliability and Validity
AbstractRecent surveillance efforts indicate that 1 in 54 American children meet the criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), making it the fastest growing neurodevelopmental disorder in the U.S. Despite evidence that ASD can be reliably diagnosed as early as 24  months, the median age at ASD diagnosis in 2016 in the U.S. was 51 months. The CLEAR Autism Diagnostic Evaluation (CADE; Willard& Kroncke,2019), was developed in response to the need to improve, shorten, and standardize the clinical ASD evaluation process. The CADE is a 33-item rating scale designed to be completed by caregivers and clinicians. The curre...

Developing and Pilot Testing Decision-Making Tools to Improve Nursing Care of Adults on the Autism Spectrum Using Simulation
AbstractNurses and other health care providers face daily challenges when delivering care in the acute care settings to adult patients on the autism spectrum (ASD). Secondary to a lack of disability-specific training, health care providers may struggle to establish and maintain a therapeutic rapport with patients diagnosed on the autism spectrum (Bury et al.,2020). The purpose of this paper is to describe the development and pilot testing of decision-making tools to guide healthcare providers as they interact with patients on the autism spectrum using a novel approach. This mixed methods project employed simulation technol...

Picture Exchange Communication System ® (PECS®) Use in a Community Setting: A Preliminary Investigation
AbstractCommunication deficits are one of the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). As such, individuals diagnosed with ASD are often taught to communicate using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems. One of the most commonly used AAC systems is the Picture Exchange Communication System® (PECS®). Despite the prevalent use of PECS within clinical and educational settings, there exists little empirical information about the use of PECS in community settings, such as summer camps. The present preliminary investigation explored the nature of participants ’ PECS use in a community setting using...
