High Rates of Mortality in Geriatric Patients Admitted for Inflammatory Bowel Disease Management
Conclusions: Age over 65 was independently associated with higher odds of death in both UC and CD patients, even after appropriate adjustment. Further research is needed to optimize care for this growing patient population. (Source: Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology)

Prodromal Signs and Symptoms of Chronic Pancreatitis: A Systematic Review
Conclusions: This research has identified some common features of patients with chronic pancreatitis, but the high heterogeneity makes it difficult to draw solid conclusions. Carefully designed studies to examine the signs and symptoms leading up to a diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis, and common combinations, are required. These would enable the development of a tool to aid in the early identification of chronic pancreatitis in the primary care setting, with potential for improved short-term and long-term outcomes for patients. Epidemiology of Autoimmune Hepatitis (AIH) in the United States Between 2014 and 2019: A Population-based National Study
Background and Aims: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic, inflammatory disease of the liver with increasing prevalence. However, limited epidemiological data exist for the prevalence of AIH in the United States. We used a large database to describe the prevalence of AIH in the United States and the autoimmune diseases associated with it. Approach and Results: Data was collected from a commercial database (Explorys Inc., Cleveland, OH), an aggregate of Electronic Health Record data from 26 major integrated health care systems in the United States. We identified a cohort of patients with a diagnosis of AIH fro...

Real-world Comorbidity Burden, Health Care Utilization, and Costs of Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis Patients With Advanced Liver Diseases
This study evaluates the real-world comorbidity burden, health care resource utilization (HRU), and costs among nonalcoholic fatty liver disease/nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NAFLD/NASH) patients with advanced liver diseases [compensated cirrhosis (CC), decompensated cirrhosis (DCC), liver transplantation (LT), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)]. Background: NAFLD/NASH is a leading cause of liver diseases. Materials and Methods: Adult NAFLD/NASH patients were identified retrospectively from MarketScan Commercial claims (2006-2016). Following initial NAFLD/NASH diagnosis, advanced liver diseases were identified u...

Prevalence and Characteristics of Chronic Hepatitis C Among Asian Americans Are Distinct From Other Ethnic Groups
Goal: The goal of this study was to determine the prevalence and characteristics of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) among Asian Americans compared with other ethnicities. Background: Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) affects an estimated 2.7 million in the United States, but there are limited data on HCV among Asian Americans. Study: A total of 3,369,881 adults over the age of 18 who were patients of the integrated health care system in Southern California and 4903 Asian participants at community hepatitis screenings were included in a cross-sectional study. Variables included HCV serology, HCV genotype, comorbid...

Prevalence of Advanced Colorectal Neoplasia in Veterans: Effects of Age, Sex, and Race/Ethnicity
Conclusions: Age and race were associated with AN and CRC prevalence. Blacks had a higher overall prevalence of both CRC and AN, but not among screenings. Men had increased risk for AN, while women had a higher proportion of proximal CRC. These findings may be used to tailor when and how Veterans are screened for CRC. Rescue Therapies for Helicobacter pylori Infection in Foreign Patients Treated in Italy
Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first study assessing H. pylori eradication rates in foreigner patients, who failed at least one therapeutic attempt, managed in Italy. Even by using a culture-based approach, the infection was not cured in a definite number of patients. (Source: Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology)

Efficacy and Safety of Modified Dual Therapy as the First-line Regimen for the Treatment of Helicobacter pylori Infection: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
This study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of modified dual therapy for the initial treatment of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection compared with mainstream first-line therapies. Methods: PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Embase were searched for randomized clinical trials evaluating the efficacy and safety of modified dual therapy as the initial treatment for H. pylori eradication compared with guideline-recommended first-line therapies. A meta-analysis was conducted using Review Manager 5.3 and dichotomous data were estimated by the risk ratio (RR) with the 95% confidence interval (CI). We also perfo...

Low Risk of Neoplasia and Intraprocedural Adverse Events in Gastric Hyperplastic Polypectomy
Conclusions: The neoplasia rate in GHPs was 1.9%, lower than most previous reports, with no major intraprocedural AEs. Physicians may consider biopsy and follow-up in frail elderly patients, but the safety of this strategy needs further confirmation. (Source: Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology)

Estimate of Refractory Reflux Disease in the United States: Economic Burden and Associated Clinical Characteristics
Goals: To update the estimate of the prevalence of refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in the United States, and to assess the clinical and economic differences between patients with and without refractory GERD. Background: GERD affects 18% to 28% of the US population, with nearly 40% of GERD patients presenting with refractory symptoms despite ongoing therapy. Study: Retrospective analysis of the IBM MarketScan databases between January 2011 and June 2018.
