Risk of Severe COVID-19 Increased by Metabolic Dysfunction-associated Fatty Liver Disease: A Meta-analysis
Background: The prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) patients and whether it affects the outcomes of COVID-19 requires investigation. Goals: The aim was to determine the prevalence of MAFLD among COVID-19 patients and its influence on the outcomes of COVID-19 by meta-analysis. Methods: Our study protocol has been registered on PROSPERO (CRD42021242243). The studies published on PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science before March 11, 2021 were screened. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS) and Agency for Healthcare Resea...

Uniting the Global Gastroenterology Community to Meet the Challenge of Climate Change and Nonrecyclable Waste
Climate change has been described as the greatest public health threat of the 21st century. It has significant implications for digestive health. A multinational team with representation from all continents, excluding Antarctica and covering 18 countries, has formulated a commentary which outlines both the implications for digestive health and ways in which this challenge can be faced. Impact of Demographic, Clinical and Psychosocial Variables on Drug Adherence and Outcomes in Indian Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Cost is not the Only Factor!
Background and Aims: Barriers to drug adherence in the developing world are multifactorial and under evaluated. We aimed to evaluate predictive factors of medication adherence in Indian patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and association of adherence with quality of life (QOL) and relapse free remission. Materials and Methods: Adherence was assessed in consecutive IBD patients using a self-administered survey questionnaire including Morisky Medication Adherence Scale together with interview and Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (SIBDQ) to assess QOL. Logistic regression analysis was used ...

Infection Control Practices and Outcomes of Endoscopy Units in the Lombardy Region of Italy: A Survey From the Italian Society of Digestive Endoscopy During COVID-19 Spread
Conclusions: Adherence to recommendations was rather good, though a minority were able to follow all recommendations. Confirmed COVID-19 seemed higher among endoscopists and nurses, suggesting that activities in the endoscopy rooms are at considerable viral spread risk. (Source: Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology)

Higher Maintenance Adalimumab Trough Levels are Associated With Achievement of Advanced Remission Targets in Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Background: Biomarker normalization and endoscopic remission are superior to clinical remission in achieving improved long-term clinical outcomes in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. Goal: To study whether higher maintenance adalimumab levels are associated with clinical remission, biomarker normalization, and endoscopic remission. Study: Data were collected retrospectively from the patients’ medical records. We defined clinical remission as a Harvey Bradshaw Index ≤5 or a partial Mayo score ≤2 for Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), respectively, biomarker normalization as ...

Use, Yield, and Risk of Device-assisted Enteroscopy in the United States: Results From a Large Retrospective Multicenter Cohort
Introduction: Since 2001, device-assisted enteroscopy (DAE) has revolutionized the diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities for managing small bowel pathology. Though commonly performed, there have been no recent large studies to assess the use, yield, and risks of DAE and none that include all 3 DAE modalities. We hypothesized that DAE is safe with high diagnostic and therapeutic yields achieved within reasonable procedure duration and here we present a large retrospective multicenter US study evaluating the use, yield, and complications of DAE. Methods: After obtaining institutional review board approval, elect...

Optimal Initial Workup in Patients With Superficial Primary Gastric MALT Lymphoma
Conclusion: LNM was an infrequent finding in gastric MALT lymphoma patients with tumor infiltration confined to the mucosa or submucosa. Besides endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasonography, APCT and chest CT are considered as optimal initial workup modalities in patients with assumed primary superficial gastric MALT lymphoma. Helicobacter pylori Infection and Serum Pepsinogen Level With the Risk of Gastric Precancerous Conditions: A Cross-sectional Study of High-risk Gastric Cancer Population in China
This study identified risk factors of gastric precancerous conditions in a nationwide multicenter cross-sectional study. Methods: Individuals who made their visit to 115 hospitals in China for gastric cancer screening were recruited. Lifestyle habits and personal information were collected through a series of questionnaires. Serum biomarker test (pepsinogen I, pepsinogen II, gastrin-17, and anti-Helicobacter pylori immunoglobulin G antibody) and endoscopy were then performed. Risk factors for gastric precancerous conditions were identified by univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: Of 14,929 subjects e...

Aerophagia Study in Indonesia: Prevalence and Association With Family-related Stress
Conclusions: The prevalence of aerophagia was found in 4.5% of Indonesian school-aged children according to Rome III criteria, but the prevalence was found only 0.1% if the belching is removed from the criteria. Besides the main symptoms, only loss of appetite was significantly more common in aerophagia among intestinal-related and extraintestinal symptoms. Family-related stress showed a significant correlation with aerophagia. (Source: Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology)

Endoscopic Evaluation of Radiologic Distal Esophageal Thickening
Conclusions: There may be a role for EGDs performed for radiologic findings of DET. Even those without risk factors for malignancy should have EGDs performed for DET. Radiologists should consider reporting the DET size in order to determine if significant endoscopic findings correlate with wall thickness. (Source: Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology)
