Cell Death Markers in Children with Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura: A Preliminary Study
AbstractImmune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disease with possible dysregulation of the apoptotic pathways. We aimed to evaluate the possible role of some apoptotic markers (caspase 3, caspase 8 and BCL2) in the pathogenesis and course of ITP. We investigated some apoptotic markers (caspase 3, caspase 8 and BCL2) using the flow cytometry in 60 children with newly diagnosed ITP, 20 children with chemotherapy-related thrombocytopenia (CRT) and 20 healthy children. We also assessed the effects of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and methyl prednisolone therapies on the platelet apoptosis in children with ne...

The Effect of Benson Relaxation Technique on Anxiety and Quality of Life in Patients with Thalassemia Major: A Clinical Trial
AbstractThalassemia major is the most common chronic blood disease in the world, especially in Asia and Iran, and it gives rise to anxiety and reduces quality of life [QOL] in patients. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Benson relaxation technique on anxiety and QOL in patients with thalassemia major. This semi-experimental clinical trial study was conducted on 140 patients with thalassemia major in two intervention groups [n  = 70] and control group [n = 70] in Ali Asghar Hospital, Zahedan. The data were collected using a demographic information form, the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inven...

Blood Inventory Management During COVID-19 Pandemic Using a Simple Mathematical Tool: A Two-Year Study from a Tertiary Care Hospital in North India
AbstractMultiple recurrent waves of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) resulted in major fluctuations in blood supply and demand, which presented a major challenge for the blood centres to maintain adequate blood inventory. Hence, the primary aim of the present study was to determine whether safety stock as a simple mathematical tool can be used to maintain optimum blood inventory to meet all blood demands. The secondary aim of the study was to test whether daily blood stock index (DBSI), which was a novel index developed by the authors and derived from the calculated safety stock, can be used to minimize blood wastag...

Investigating the Correlation Between HLA-II Gene Polymorphism and RhE Alloimmunization in Pregnant Chinese Women
This study demonstrated that HLA-II haplotypes are associated with allo-anti-E antibodies in pregnant women from Sichuan Province, China. The HLA-DRB1*09:01-DQA1*03:02-DQB1*03:03 phenotype may enhance the formation of anti-E alloantibodies, and the HLA-DRB1*09:01 molecule may play a key role in alloimmunity. Clinical Relevance of Interferon Regulatory Family-4 (IRF4) Expression in Newly Diagnosed Patients with Multiple Myeloma
AbstractMultiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant plasma cell neoplasm with complex biology and heterogenous course. Interferon regulatory factor 4 (IRF4) transcription factor, important key developmental stages of hematopoiesis, represents an excellent potential therapeutic target. The present work aimed to investigate the expression status of IRF4 in the diagnostic bone marrow biopsy (BMB) cores of MM patients. This prospective study included 62 newly diagnosed MM patients. The expression of IRF4 was assessed in the BMB by immunohistochemistry (IHC). The data were correlated to the patients ’ clinico-pathological features, ...

Evaluation of a New Method of Leukocyte Extractions from the Leukoreduction Filter
This study ’s purpose was to optimize the leukocyte extraction protocol and evaluate the efficacy of this new protocol. 12BioR blood filters were collected from Tehran Blood Transfusion Center. A twosyringe system and Multi-step rinsing were designed for cell extraction. The final purpose of this optimizatio n was: (1) removed the residual RBCs, (2) reversed the leukocyte trapping process, and (3) remove the microparticles to obtain the high yield of target cells. Finally, Extracted cells were evaluated by Automated Cell count; Samples smear differential cell count, Trypan blue, and Annexin-PI staining. The results showe...

A Comparative Analysis of Early T-Cell Precursor Lymphoblastic Leukemia/Lymphoma (ETP-ALL/LBL) and Non-ETP-ALL/LBL in a Tertiary Cancer Care Center Based in Western India
AbstractEarly T-cell precursor lymphoblastic leukemia (ETP-ALL) has a unique immunophenotype with very early T-cell differentiation. The current study summarises the distinct clinicopathological aspects of ETP-ALL and compares them with non-ETP-ALL. Twenty-nine ETP-ALL and 191 non-ETP-ALL cases were retrieved between 2018 and 2021. AP value was determined for each of the patient charaterisics (Table1) to see for any significant relationship (P <  0.05) with ETP-ALL versus non-ETP-ALL. Kaplan–Meier log rank test was applied to look for any significant differences in OS for both the ALLs. ETP-ALL had an incidence of...

Preconditioning Modified-Easix as a Predictor of Prognosis in Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Recipients
AbstractAllogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloHCT) is associated with severe complications, most of which share a common physiopathological background characterized by endothelial dysfunction. A novel risk assessment model, endothelial activation and stress index (EASIX), has been introduced as a predictor of endothelial activation. This retrospective study was performed to evaluate the predictive impact of EASIX/modified-EASIX (mEASIX) on transplant outcome. Medical records of 398 alloHCT recipients [median age: 43(17 –71) years; M/F: 243/155] were examined. EASIX/mEASIX were calculated at specific tim...

A Phase 2 Randomized Controlled Trial of Single-Agent Hydroxyurea Versus Thalidomide Among Adult Transfusion Dependent β Thalassemia Patients
The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy and safety of hydroxyurea and low dose thalidomide in adult transfusion dependent β thalassemia. A total of 39 transfusion dependent β thalassemia patients were randomized into three arms: Arm A (Hydroxyurea 500 mg/day), Arm B (thalidomide 50 mg/day), and Control Arm. The primary outcome was rise in haemoglobin at 24-weeks from the baseline levels. The mean age of the cohort was 26.9 ± 4.7 years. Total 13 patients (33.3%) were splenectomised. The mean rise of haemoglobin at the end of 24 weeks was 0.18 ± 0.645 g/dl, 0.56 ± 1.343 g/dl, and −â...

Does the Inclusion of CD34+  B-cell Progenitors (Hematogones) in Stem Cell Enumeration of Apheresis Product Using ISHAGE Protocol Affect the Final Harvest dose Adequacy and the Outcome of Transplantation? A Single Institution Experience from Southern India
ConclusionThe inclusion of hematogones in CD34+  HSC enumeration of apheresis products did not yield any impact on neither the final dose nor the outcome of transplant in this study. However, it is recommended to exclude them from the final count when they are>  10% of the final HSC lest it overestimate the final harvest dose and outcome of HSCT.
