Room for Improvement: A 20-Year Single Center Experience with Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation for Myelodysplastic Syndromes
AbstractAllogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) remains the only curative therapeutic approach for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). The aim of the study was to assess the efficacy/safety of allo-SCT as well as to identify factors influencing post-transplant survival. One hundred and two MDS patients (median age: 48  years; 57 males) who underwent allo-SCT were retrospectively evaluated. Twenty seven patients were transplanted from HLA-matched sibling and 75 patients received grafts from unrelated donors. Peripheral blood was a source of stem cell for 79 patients. Reduced intensity conditioning was us...

Prognostic Factors in Acute Myeloid Leukemia with t(8;21)/AML1-ETO: Strategies to Define High-Risk Patients
AbstractAcute myeloid leukemia (AML) with t(8;21)/AML1-ETO is considered to have favorable prognosis. However, outcome is not universally satisfactory. The aim of this study was to search for potential prognostic risk factors which can help individualized treatment in t(8;21) AML patients. All available clinical and laboratory indicators were analyzed retrospectively in 103 t (8;21) AML patients. All patients were followed up for median of 30  months (range 0.3–73 months). CD56 and IDH1 were found to be closely related to high recurrence (p = 0.002;p = 0.001) and incidence of cumulative recurrence (p = 0.00...

Donor ’s Perspectives on Blood Donation During Covid-19 Pandemic
This study was designed to understand blood donors' knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions during the Covid-19 pandemic. A descriptive cross-sectional study to assess donor’s knowledge, at titude, and perception regarding blood donation using self-administered 20 questions. The study duration was 4 months. A total 503 whole blood donors participated. The fear of infection and reduced blood donor motivation were observed to be the major deterrents of blood donation activity. Environme nt of blood donation area and travel to blood donation site were perceived two major sources of Covid-19 infection by participants. The top...

Significance of Adopting Nucleic Acid Amplification Technique for Blood Donor Screening in a Resource Limited Setting: A Study from a Single Centre in South India
This study was aimed at determining the following in blood donors: 1. seroprevalence of HIV, HBV& HCV, malarial parasite and Syphlis 2. NAT  and seroyield for HIV, HBV and HCV 3. viral load in NAT yield donations 4. Pattern of HBV serological markers in HBV NAT yield donations 80,809 blood donations were screened over an 8 year period (2012–2019) for antiHIV I and II, HBsAg, antiHCV antibodies, malarial parasite and VDRL. Seronegativ e samples were tested by NAT using a multiplex PCR in a pool of six. NAT yield samples were tested for viral load and HBV serological markers. Seropositive samples were tested for NAT a...

Bone Marrow Metastasis in a Suspected Case of Angiosarcoma Unravelled by Immunohistochemistry
AbstractA 40-year-old female presented with progressive fatigue and left upper abdominal discomfort for 1 month. CT scan revealed ill-defined hypervascular lesions in the liver and diffuse enlargement of the spleen. She had severe anemia with leukoerythroblastic reaction. Bone marrow smears revealed clusters and discrete spindle cells, few plump and round cells. Trephine biopsy revealed an infiltrative spindle-cell neoplasm replacing the marrow with the focal presence of epithelioid cell clusters. On immunostaining, the tumor cells were positive for CD34, CD31, Friend Leukemia Virus Integration-1 (FLI1), and vimentin, cons...

Decrease in Mortality from Sepsis: Impact of the Multidisciplinary Program for the Hematologic Patient at Very High Risk
AbstractA program for the hematologic patient at very high risk of infections (HAR, from its initials in Spanish) was implemented, based on a multidisciplinary team and six measures intended to reduce the colonization and subsequent sepsis by multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO). We aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of the HAR program in terms of MDRO infections mainly caused byKlebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-producing and multidrug-resistantPseudomona aeruginosa, and sepsis-related mortality. We established retrospective comparisons between the pre-HAR period (2016 –2018) and the post-HAR period (2018–2019), ...

Are Hematologic Patients Trojan Horse for COVID-19?
This study aimed to compare the SARS-CoV-2 viral shedding time between patients diagnosed with hematologic diseases (HD) and a control group. A total of 110 patients were enrolled in this retrospective study; 55 patients with a diagnosis of HD and 55 sex and comorbidity matched controls without a diagnosis of HD, who caught COVID-19 at the same period. Thirty-eight patients were hospitalized in each group. Viral shedding time, COVID-19 severity, need for intensive care unit support, and mortality rates were compared between groups. Median viral shedding time was 24  days in hospitalized HD patients and 12 days in the hos...

Radiotherapy in Adult Burkitt Lymphoma: A Retrospective Analysis in a Large University Center
Abstract Radiotherapy is not usually a part of standard Burkitt lymphoma treatment. We aim to assess patient and treatment characteristics of Burkitt lymphoma, particularly RT use, and how they relate to survival. Retrospective cohort of adult patients treated from 2008 to 2019 in an academic hospital. All patients had biopsy-proven Burkitt ’s lymphoma staged I to IV according to St. Jude’s/Murphy staging system. Patients were followed for at least six-months or until death. Forty-eight consecutive patients were selected. Median age at diagnosis was 36.9 years (18–62). Median follow-up was 7.78 months (0.5–187.5)...
