Clinical Outcomes and Determinants of Survival in Patients with Hematologic Malignancies Admitted to Intensive Care Units with Critical Illness
We present data from a dedicated haematology oncology setting including 63 patients with a median age of 60 years admitted to the ICU for critical illness with organ dysfunction. The most common underlying diagnosis was multiple myeloma (30%) followed by acute myeloid leukemia (25%). Chemotherapy had been initiated for 90.7% patients before ICU admission. The most common indication for ICU care was respiratory failure (36.5%) and shock (17.5%) patients. Evidence of sepsis was present in 44 (69%) patients. After shifting to ICU, 32 (50%) patients required inotropic support and 18 (28%) required invasive mechanical ventilati...

Halofuginone Inhibits Osteoclastogenesis and Enhances Osteoblastogenesis by Regulating Th17/Treg Cell Balance in Multiple Myeloma Mice with Bone Lesions
AbstractEvidences shows that T helper 17 (Th17) and regulatory T (Treg) cells imbalance plays a critical role in bone lesions of MM patients. Therefore, regulating the Th17/Treg imbalance may be beneficial for bone lesions in MM. Ten MM mice complicated with bone lesions were established and divided into the halofuginone (HF) group and the PBS group. After treatment, tibia and fibula from both groups were scanned by micro-CT. Osteoclasts and osteoblasts were validated by histochemical staining and ELISA. Th17 and Treg cells were tested by flow cytometry. The correlations between Th17/Treg cell ratio and osteoclasts, osteob...

Unmasking Infection Risks in Multiple Myeloma: Insights from a Retrospective Analysis
The objective of our research is to investigate the factors that can forecast infection risk in MM patients. In pursuit of this, we conducted a thorough retrospective examination of medical records from Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore, involving 145 MM patients. Out of the 145 patients analyzed, almost half (47.5%;n = 69) encountered at least one infection during the course of their disease. Respiratory-related infections were the most prevalent (76.2%), followed by urinary tract infections (10%) and instances of diarrhea (8.8%). Notably, gram-positive bacteria constituted the majority of identified ca...

Prothrombin G20210A Mutation is Rare but not Absent Among North Indian Patients with Thromboembolic Events
AbstractTraditionally considered to be absent in India, prothrombin gene G20210A (NM_000506.5(F2): c.*97G  >  A) mutation (PGM) has recently been reported in few Indian patients. We aimed to assess the prevalence of PGM in patients with thromboembolic events from north India region. The thrombophilia workup comprising Protein C, Protein S, Antithrombin functional activity, lupus anticoagulant and anti-AC A and anti-ß2GP1 antibodies were performed in coagulation analyzer (ACLTOP-500, Instrumentation Laboratory, USA) and automated chemiluminescent assay analyzer (ACUSTAR, IL) respectively. PCR–RFLP was used to perf...

Granulocytapheresis Donor Deferrals Pattern at a Pediatric Tertiary Care Centre in Northern India
This study was designed to analyse deferral patterns to appropriately create a pool of granulocyte donors. A retrospective analysis was done to study the deferral pattern among donors who presented to our pediatric tertiary care hospital during the last year (August 2022-August 2023) for granulocyte apheresis. The donor selection criteria are like any apheresis donor in addition to having appropriate veins in both the arms and donor providing consent for mobilization (Dexamethasone). A total of 181 donors with a mean age of 31.3  ± 6.7 years (males 93.9%) were screened for granulocytapheresis. 61 donors (33.7%; 51 Ma...

Association Between NAD(P)H Quinone Oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) Gene Methylation/Expression and Bleeding Incidence Among an Iranian Population Undergoing Warfarin Therapy
AbstractIncreased bleeding tendency is a common and challenging complication of warfarin therapy which results in extensive pharmacogenomic studies in order to develop a personalized dosing approach and minimize the risk of related side effects. Here we aimed to explore the potential role of NQO1 gene expression in warfarin response in a group of Iranian patients. We also evaluated the NQO1 promoter methylation and its association with mRNA expression. A total of 87 patients on warfarin therapy including 34 cases with drug-induced bleeding events and 53 matched controls without bleedings were included in the study. The exp...

Effect of Age of Transfused Red Blood Cell Units on Clinical Outcomes in Critically Ill Patients
AbstractAnemia in critically ill patients requires red cell transfusions to increase oxygen delivery and prevent deleterious outcomes. The primary objective of the present study was to determine the effect of storage age of transfused red cells on 30-day mortality in critically ill patients, with secondary objectives of determining the effect on length of stay, organ failure, and adverse transfusion reactions. This prospective study was conducted on patients admitted to the intensive care unit after obtaining approval from institutional ethics committee. Patients were randomized to transfusion with packed red blood cells (...
