Assessment of Transfusion Practices Among Doctors During COVID-19 Pandemic Using Questionnaire-Based Survey
AbstractDuring COVID-19 pandemic, many doctors were redirected from various disciplines for care of COVID-19 patients. A survey was conducted among doctors involved, to assess transfusion practices during the pandemic. To assess the knowledge, attitude, and practices of blood transfusion among doctors involved in care of COVID-19 patients. A cross-sectional survey using an online questionnaire (Google form) was used to assess knowledge and need of transfusion, attitude towards modifications in transfusion process, and practices during pandemic. Analysis was done among subgroups based on experience (designation), user type ...

Comparison of Point-of-Care PT-INR by Hand-Held Device with Conventional PT-INR Testing in Anti-phospholipid Antibody Syndrome Patients on Oral Anticoagulation
This study assessed agreement of paired PT INR testing by a POC device vs. conventional platform-based laboratory test, in APS patients on OAC using a pre-determined definition of agreement. Simultaneous paired PT INR estimation in 92 APS patients was carried out, during October 2020-September 2021. POC INR was performed on capillary blood (pin prick) using the qLabs ® PT-INR hand-held device, while laboratory INR estimation was performed using citrated blood (venepuncture) on STA-R Max Analyzer® using STA-NeoPTimal thromboplastin reagent®.Concordance was defined no greater than  ± 30% (as per international standar...

Clinico-Hematological Profile in Hemoglobin SE Disease: A Case Series from a Tertiary Care Centre
AbstractHemoglobin SE (HbSE) disease are rare globally and there is paucity of literature regarding this condition. Cases reported in the Indian scenario so far have been limited to the tribal populations. This case series aims to highlight the rarity of this double heterozygous state and to raise awareness of its community prevalence beyond the tribal population. This is a case series over a 5-year observation period with six cases of double heterozygosity for HbS and HbE in our tertiary care centre. Four cases were in the 8 –15 years’ age group and 2 cases of 24–25 years’ age group reported for initial evaluati...

The Circular RNA Circ-ANAPC7 as a Biomarker for the Risk Stratification of Myelodysplastic Syndrome
This study enrolled 125 patients diagnosed with MDS and divided them into five groups according to IPSS-R (very high group, 25; high group, 25; intermediate group, 25; low group, 25; and very low group, 25), and 25 patients with IDA were studied as control group from our bone marrow cell bank. Bone marrow cell were used as material in this study to measure the expression level of circ-ANAPC7 by qRT-PCR. An evaluation of diagnostic value was conducted using ROC curves. Circ-ANAPC7 expression levels were 5.623  ± 4.483, 28.396 ± 12.938, 91.867 ± 37.010, 202.525 ± 54.911, 337.633 ± 86.013, and 502.269...

Efficacy and Safety of Biosimilar Romiplostim Versus Innovator Romiplostim in Patients with Chronic Immune Thrombocytopenia
AbstractRomiplostim is a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved therapy for immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Biosimilar is a biological product that has no clinical meaningful difference from an existing FDA-approved reference product. It has a potential of lowering health-care-related cost. Biosimilar of romiplostim can be made available to patients with ITP at a low cost and can be beneficial in providing the best therapy. Thus, the efficacy and safety of biosimilar romiplostim (ENZ110) was compared with innovator romiplostim (Nplate) with respect to platelet response in patients with chronic ITP. This was a prospecti...

Higher mTOR Expression: A Marker of Poor Outcome in Patients with de Novo AML
AbstractAcute myeloid leukemia (AML) displays significant clinical diversity mainly due to the variation in the underlying molecular defects, which is now recognized as the main driver for leukemogenesis. mTOR deregulation is thought to promote the proliferation and survival of leukemic blasts. This work aimed to studymTOR gene expression as a prognostic marker and a potential therapeutic target in AML. Quantitative real-time PCR evaluatedmTOR expression in 45 new AML cases in relation to disease characteristics and outcome. mTOR was overexpressed in AML patients and higher levels were seen in the group that was not in com...

Body Iron Store and its Association with Risk of First Episode of Spontaneous Lower Extremity Deep Vein Thrombosis/  Pulmonary Embolism: A Case-Control Study
ConclusionHigher iron stores, rather than ID, were associated with increased risk of DVT/  PE among those with Hb ≥ 9 g/dL. Anaemia and elevated RDW were also associated with risk of DVT/ PE. ID was not associated with poorer DVT recanalization at week-12. (Source: Indian Journal of Hematology and Blood Transfusion)

Blood Donation Screening of Transfusion-Transmissible Viral Infection Using Two Different Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) Platforms: A Single Tertiary Care Oncology Centre Experience
In this study, we describe our experience in screening viral TTIs using two formats of NAT: cobas ® MPX2 polymerase chain reaction- based minipool NAT (PCR MP-NAT) and Procleix Utrio Plus transcription-mediated amplificationbased individual donor-NAT (TMA ID-NAT). Data routinely collected as a part of blood bank operations were retrospectively analysed over a period of 70 months for TTIs. Bloo d samples were initially screened for HIV, HBV, HCV, syphillis by chemiluminescence and malaria by Rapid card test. In addition to serological testing, all samples were further screened by TMA-based ID-NAT (ProcleixUltrio Plus Assa...

The Usability of Platelet Mass Index Thresholds to Assess the Repeated Platelet Transfusion Requirements in Neonates
AbstractTo evaluate the usability of platelet mass index (PMI) thresholds to assess the repeated platelet transfusion requirements in neonates who have received transfusion within the previous six days. This is a retrospective cross-sectional study conducted with neonates who received prophylactic platelet transfusion. The PMI was calculated as platelet count ( × 1000/mm3) × mean platelet volume (MPV) (fL). Platelet transfusions were divided into two groups as first (Group 1) and repeated transfusions (Group 2). The increment and percentage of increment in platelet counts, MPV and PMI after transfusion were compare...

Comparison of Clopidogrel, Prasugrel and Ticagrelor Response of Patients by PFA-100-Innovance Test Results
AbstractDevices such as stents and flow diverters require the use of safe and fast antiplatelet therapy. We aimed to compare the responses to clopidogrel, prasugrel, and ticagrelor by assessing the Platelet Function Analysis (PFA-100)-Innovance test results of patients undergoing endovascular stenting to determine their resistance rates. Sixty-one women and 55 men, aged 18 –87 years, were included in this study. Patients were divided into three groups: clopidogrel treatment, prasugrel treatment, and ticagrelor treatment. The systemic diseases of the patients, especially hypertension and diabetes, were recorded. The test...

Genetic Spectrum in F13A1 Detected by Next-Generation Sequencing Among North Indian Patients with FXIII Deficiency
ConclusionInherited FXIII deficiency with bleeding is associated with genetic defects in predominantly theF13A1 gene. A variety of variants were seen in this cohort. A nonsense variant c.1127G>A found in three of our cases seems to be recurrent. This data will contribute to designing functional studies and antenatal testing in affected families.
