Continuum of sensory profiles in diabetes mellitus patients with and without neuropathy and pain
ConclusionsThere is a continuum in the sensory profiles of diabetic patients, with a more pronounced sensory loss in pDSPN group probably reflecting somatosensory nerve fibre degeneration. An analysis of ‘gain of function’ abnormalities (allodynia, hyperalgesia) did not offer a key to understanding the pathophysiology of spontaneous diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain. Assessment of Body Perception Disturbances in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome: a Systematic Review using the COSMIN guideline
ConclusionsThree main assessment methods for CRPS body perception disturbances are currently used. Full psychometric evaluation has not been completed for any of the assessment methods. As a consequence, we could not fully apply the COSMIN guideline. To date, there is no agreement concerning the use of a specific questionnaire or scale. The results indicate a need for further research such as psychometric properties of these questionnaires. (Source: European Journal of Pain)

Indicators of central sensitization in chronic neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury
ConclusionsThese results support the value of TSP and heat-induced SSRs as proxies for central sensitization in widespread neuropathic pain syndromes after SCI. Measures of pain-autonomic interaction emerged as a promising tool for the objective investigation of sensitized neuronal states in chronic pain conditions.SignificanceWe present two surrogate readouts for central sensitization in neuropathic pain following SCI. On the one hand, temporal summation of tonic heat pain is enhanced in subjects with neuropathic pain. On the other hand, pain-autonomic interaction reveals potential advanced measures in chronic pain, as su...

From protection to non ‐protection: A mixed methods study investigating movement, posture and recovery from disabling low back pain
ConclusionThe findings offer a framework for understanding how people make sense of movement and posture during the process of recovery from persistent, disabling non-specific LBP. This involved a re-conceptualisation of movement and posture, from threatening, to therapeutic.SignificanceFindings from qualitative interviews before and after a Cognitive Functional Therapy intervention in 12 people with disabling low back pain highlighted an individualized recovery journey from conscious and nonconscious protection to conscious non-protection for some, and nonconscious non-protection for many. Pre and post-quantitative measur...
