Does Pain Medication Influence Outcomes in Elderly People seeking care for Back Pain? BACE Cohort study
ConclusionsIn the present study, although patients who de-escalated or stopped analgesic had less pain and disability, pain medication overall does not result in better outcomes in older people with back pain. (Source: European Journal of Pain)

Prognosis of a new episode of low ‐back pain in a community inception cohort
ConclusionsThis study found most episodes of LBP recover rapidly and more quickly than typically reported for clinical populations. The worst pain during the episode was typically moderate to high despite the rapid recovery for most people. Approximately 40% of the participants who experienced an episode of LBP sought care. Face validity of the ICD ‐10 criteria of substance abuse and dependence for patients prescribed cannabis‐based medicines for chronic pain – a survey of pain medicine physicians in Canada, Germany and Israel
ConclusionsA collaboration of psychiatrists and pain physicians is required to define criteria and develop instruments to capture abuse and dependence of CbMs in chronic pain patients. (Source: European Journal of Pain)

Incidence of Trigeminal Neuralgia: a Population ‐Based Study in Central Sweden
ConclusionsTrigeminal neuralgia incidence was estimated to 5.5 per 100 000 person-years. The incidence was higher for females and increased with older age. (Source: European Journal of Pain)

The selfBACK artificial intelligence ‐based smartphone app can improve low back pain outcome even in patients with high levels of depression or stress
ConclusionsThe selfBACK app can improve outcomes even in those with high levels of depressive/stress symptoms and could be recommended for patients with LBP. (Source: European Journal of Pain)

Describing the nonsurgical, nonpharmacological interventions offered to adolescents with persistent back pain in randomized trials: A scoping review
ConclusionsRandomized trials for adolescents with persistent back pain have primarily relied upon an outdated, biomechanical explanation of persisting pain. Future randomized trials should align with current treatment recommendations and measure outcomes across multiple biopsychosocial domains.SignificanceThis scoping review describes in detail the interventions included in randomized trials for adolescents with persistent, nonspecific back pain. The review is important because it reveals discrepancies between those interventions and the interventions recommended for this population. (Source: European Journal of Pain)

How does pain work? A qualitative analysis of how young adults with chronic pain conceptualize the biology of pain
ConclusionThese conceptualizations, and the language used by young adults with childhood-onset chronic pain to describe them are discussed. Recommendations are provided for how PSE interventions can be tailored for young adults.SignificanceThis study provides new qualitative insights reflecting a variety of ways that young adults with childhood-onset chronic pain conceptualize pain. Some conceptualizations of pain align with modern pain science principles (altered function of nervous and endocrine systems) while others conflict (unhealed injury). Health professionals can use these findings to tailor their pain education in...

Human assumed central sensitization in people with acute non ‐specific low back pain: A cross‐sectional study of the association with brain‐derived neurotrophic factor, clinical, psychological and demographic factors
ConclusionsThis study confirms that HACS is present in some people with acute LBP, but this was not associated with pain or disability. Further, no relationship was observed between BDNF and HACS in acute LBP. More research is needed to understand factors contributing to individual variation in sensory measures in LBP.SignificanceHuman assumed central sensitization (HACS) is present in acute low back pain (LBP) but factors contributing to individual variation are not fully explored. This study investigated the relationship between factors such as brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and HACS in acute LBP. Our findings ...

Accumulation of long ‐term diseases is associated with musculoskeletal pain dimensions among middle‐aged individuals with musculoskeletal pain
ConclusionThere is a need for a better understanding of the relationships between accumulated long-term diseases and MSK pain.SignificanceThis study on middle-aged individuals with musculoskeletal pain showed that the presence of long-term diseases was clearly associated with pain frequency, bothersomeness of pain, pain intensity and number of pain sites. Compared with no long-term diseases, the association between accumulated (two or more) long-term diseases and pain dimensions was stronger than the association between one long-term disease and pain dimensions.
