Identification and organ-specific patterns of expression of two metallothioneins in the sentinel species Gammarus fossarum
In this study, we identified two metallothionein-coding transcripts, mt1 and mt2, in the transcriptome of the amphipod Gammarus fossarum, a sentinel species widely used to assess the quality of watersheds. For the first time, we investigated the organ-specific patterns of expression of these two mt transcripts at the individual level in the gills and the caeca of this small crustacean. In silico analysis and experimental exposures to environmentally relevant concentrations of cadmium, zinc and silver showed that G. fossarum mt1 induction is stronger after Cd exposure compared to the other tested metals. G. fossarum mt1 was...

Responses of digestive enzyme profiles in newly-hatched (Zoea I) larvae of the mud crab Scylla serrata to intermittent food availability and food deprivation
Comp Biochem Physiol B Biochem Mol Biol. 2023 Oct 8:110906. doi: 10.1016/j.cbpb.2023.110906. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTActivities (mU larva-1) of enzymes critical to digestion were examined to better understand how newly-hatched (Zoea I) larvae of the mud crab Scylla serrata respond to intermittent food availability and food deprivation. Specifically, this study examined the activities of trypsin-like proteases, nonspecific esterases, and α-amylase across three experiments that simulated scenarios in which larvae hatch and experience rearing conditions where food was either: (1) continuously available or unavailable; ...

Seasonal expressions of nerve growth factor (NGF), and its receptor TrkA and p75 in the scent glands of muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus)
Comp Biochem Physiol B Biochem Mol Biol. 2023 Sep 27;269:110905. doi: 10.1016/j.cbpb.2023.110905. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNGF, also known as nerve growth factor, is crucial for the survival and differentiation of the nervous system, in addition to being involved in a number of non-neuronal systems. The aim of this work was to investigate the immunolocalization and expression patterns of NGF, its receptor, tyrosine kinase receptor A (TrkA), and p75 in the scent glands of muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) throughout the breeding and non-breeding seasons. The scent gland mass showed considerable seasonal variations, with hi...

Genome-wide identification and expression analysis of Dmrt gene family and their role in gonad development of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas)
In this study, a total of three members of the Dmrt gene family were identified and characterized in Crassostrea gigas, and all these CgDmrt genes contained a conserved DM domain. Analysis of the phylogenetic tree and gene structure revealed that Dmrt genes clustered on one branch may have similar functions in bivalves. Expression profiling of CgDmrt mRNA in different tissues and stages of gonad development indicated that CgDmrt3 exhibited sexually dimorphic expression and played an important role in the development of the male gonad in C. gigas. Furthermore, analysis of CgDmrt mRNA expression between fertile triploids and...
