Short communication: Ascorbyl/ascorbate ratio as a marker of oxidative stress in larvae (Apis mellifera) exposed to Paenibacillus larvae
This study aimed to assess the oxidative stress levels in larvae exposed to three different strains of P. larvae through their diet by examining the ascorbyl radical (A) to ascorbate anion (AH¯) ratio. The results revealed that larvae inoculated with P. larvae exhibited a lower value of this index compared to uninoculated ones. Interestingly, the level of A remained constant, while the concentration of AH¯ increased. Said increase correlated with the virulence of the specific P. larvae strain used in the inoculation. These findings suggest a potential link between AH¯ molecules and a defense response in A. mellifera lar...

Estrogen regulates the transcription of guppy isotocin receptors
Comp Biochem Physiol B Biochem Mol Biol. 2023 Aug 21;269:110895. doi: 10.1016/j.cbpb.2023.110895. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEstrogen can regulate oxytocin receptor expression, which is mediated through estrogen receptors (ESRs) in mammals, initiating parturition. To further study the reproductive physiological process of ovoviviparous teleosts, guppies (Poecilia reticulata) were employed as the research model in the present study to identify the transcriptional regulation of ESRs on isotocin receptors (itrs). Since guppy embryos develop inside the ovary, in the present study, the levels of itrs in the ovarian stroma of...

Induced swimming modified the antioxidant status of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata)
Comp Biochem Physiol B Biochem Mol Biol. 2023 Aug 19:110893. doi: 10.1016/j.cbpb.2023.110893. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSwimming has relevant physiological changes in farmed fish, although the potential link between swimming and oxidative stress remains poorly studied. We investigated the effects of different medium-term moderate swimming conditions for 6 h on the antioxidant status of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), analyzing the activity of enzymes related to oxidative stress in the liver and skeletal red and white muscle. Forty fish were induced to swim individually with the following conditions: steady low (SL, ...

SIRT1-NRF2-TFEB axis-mediated hepatic lipophagy alleviates the lipid deposition induced by high glucose
In this study, we focused on yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) as the model to investigate lipophagy activation under high glucose-induced lipid deposition. We hypothesized that lipophagy mediates high glucose-induced lipid deposition and proposed the involvement of the SIRT1-NRF2-TFEB pathway in the activation of lipophagy. We found that there was a functional antioxidative responsive element (ARE) on the tfeb gene promoter; high glucose (HG) increased the nuclear translocation of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (NRF2) recruitment to the tfeb promoter; TFEB, whose expression is regulated by NRF2, mediated the HG...

Behavioural and physiological responses of juvenile geoduck (Panopea zelandica) following acute thermal stress
This study focused on characterising animal behaviour, haemocyte characteristics, and heat shock protein (HSP70 & HSP90) mRNA expression following exposure to elevated temperatures, such as those encountered during marine heatwaves around 20 °C and an extreme scenario of 25 °C, contrasted to an ambient temperature of 17 °C. After 24 h of heat challenge, P. zelandica were found to be significantly influenced by the thermal changes, as there were differences recorded in all the responses examined. With increasing temperatures, juvenile geoducks were observed to fully emerge from the sediment a behaviour that has not p...
