Estimating dynamic individual coactivation patterns based on densely sampled resting-state fMRI data and utilizing it for better subject identification
Brain Struct Funct. 2023 Aug 12. doi: 10.1007/s00429-023-02689-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAs a complex dynamic system, the brain exhibits spatially organized recurring patterns of activity over time. Coactivation patterns (CAPs), which analyzes data from each single frame, have been utilized to detect transient brain activity states recently. However, previous CAP analyses have been conducted at the group level, which might neglect meaningful individual differences. Here, we estimated individual CAP states at both subject- and scan-level based on a densely sampled dataset: Midnight Scan Club. We used differential ide...

Pain-related evoked potentials with concentric surface electrodes in patients and healthy subjects: a systematic review
Brain Struct Funct. 2023 Aug 9. doi: 10.1007/s00429-023-02690-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPain-related evoked potentials with concentric surface electrodes (PREP with CE) have been increasingly used in the diagnostics of polyneuropathies as well as in pain research. However, the study results are partly inconsistent regarding their utility to distinguish between normal and abnormal findings. The present systematic review aimed to summarise and compare study results, where PREP with CE were used in healthy subjects or patients and to identify possible influencing factors. We found 36 research articles, of which 21 inve...

Hypothalamus volumes in adolescent Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome  (ME/CFS): impact of self-reported fatigue and illness duration
Brain Struct Funct. 2023 Aug 3. doi: 10.1007/s00429-023-02682-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAdolescent Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a complex illness of unknown aetiology. Emerging theories suggest ME/CFS may reflect a progressive, aberrant state of homeostasis caused by disturbances within the hypothalamus, yet few studies have investigated this using magnetic resonance imaging in adolescents with ME/CFS. We conducted a volumetric analysis to investigate whether whole and regional hypothalamus volumes in adolescents with ME/CFS differed compared to healthy controls, and whether these v...

Early development of the functional brain network in newborns
In this study, graph theory modeling and network science analysis were employed to investigate the impact of age, gender, weight, and typical and atypical development on brain development. Local and global topologies of functional connectomes obtained from rs-fMRI data were collected from 421 neonates aged between 31 and 45 postmenstrual weeks who were in natural sleep without any sedation. The results showed that global efficiency, local efficiency, clustering coefficient, and small-worldness increased with age, while modularity and characteristic path length decreased with age. The normalized rich-club coefficient displa...
