Effect mechanism of micron-scale zero-valent iron enhanced pyrite-driven denitrification biofilter for nitrogen and phosphorus removal
This study aims to explore the effect mechanism of micron-scale zero-valent iron (mZVI) to improve nitrogen and phosphorus removal in a pyrite (FeS2)-driven denitrification biofilter (DNBF) for the secondary effluent treatment. Two similar DNBFs (DNBF-A with FeS2 as fillers and DNBF-B with the mixture mZVI and FeS2 as carrier) were developed. The results showed that NO3--N, total nitrogen (TN) and PO43--P removal efficiencies were up to 91.64%, 67.44% and 80.26% in DNBF-B, which were obviously higher than those of DNBF-A (with NO3--N, TN and PO43--P removal efficiencies of 38.39%, 44.89% and 53.02%, respectively). Kinetic ...

Synthesis and in vitro characteristics of biogenic-derived hydroxyapatite for bone remodeling applications
Bioprocess Biosyst Eng. 2023 Nov 12. doi: 10.1007/s00449-023-02940-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe inorganic component of bone matrix, hydroxyapatite (HAp) (with formula Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2), can be obtained from inexpensive waste resources that serve as excellent calcium precursors. In the present study, HAp nano-powder was synthesized from eggshells (ES) and crab shells (CS) by wet chemical precipitation method. Also, a hybrid sample was considered which is a mixture of HAp nano-powder synthesized from eggshells (25%) and crab shells (75%) (EC). The presence of phosphate, carbonate, and hydroxyl groups in the synthesize...

Large-scale crystallization as an intermediate processing step in insulin downstream process: explored advantages and identified tool for process intensification
Bioprocess Biosyst Eng. 2023 Nov 8. doi: 10.1007/s00449-023-02931-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe rising global prevalence of diabetes and increasing demand for insulin, calls for an increase in accessibility and affordability of insulin drugs through efficient and cost-effective manufacturing processes. Often downstream operations become manufacturing bottlenecks while processing a high volume of product. Thus, process integration and intensification play an important role in reducing process steps and time, volume reduction, and lower equipment footprints, which brings additional process efficiencies and lowers the ...

Effect of blocking the haem synthesis pathway and weakening the haem synthesis pathway for sirohaem on the growth of and vitamin B < sub > 12 < /sub > synthesis in Ensifer adhaerens Casida A
Bioprocess Biosyst Eng. 2023 Nov 6. doi: 10.1007/s00449-023-02939-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo block and weaken the bacterial branched VB12 synthetic metabolic pathway, homologous recombination technology was used to knock out the sirohaem synthase gene cysG located in the chromosome and the endogenous A plasmid of the Ensifer adhaerens Casida A strain, and the expression of the uroporphyrinogen III decarboxylase gene hemE was weakened by weak promoter substitution. The growth of the engineered strains and the production of VB12 and haem were analysed and measured in the engineered strains, aiming to provide a new s...

Model construction and theoretical evaluation of the performance improvement of acetone-butanol-ethanol extractive fermentation by adding surfactant
Bioprocess Biosyst Eng. 2023 Nov 4. doi: 10.1007/s00449-023-02942-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSevere butanol toxicity to the metabolism of solventogenic clostridia significantly impede the application of fermentative butanol as a biofuel. Liquid-liquid extraction is an efficient method to reduce the butanol toxicity by in-situ removing it in the extractant phase. Butanol mass transfer into extractant phase in static acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) extractive fermentation with biodiesel as the extractant could be enhanced by adding a tiny amount of surfactant such as tween-80. In the case of corn-based ABE extractive fer...

Bioprocess Biosyst Eng. 2023 Nov 2. doi: 10.1007/s00449-023-02934-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe use of chicken waste can contribute to the development of new processes and obtaining molecules with high added value. An experimental design was applied to evaluate the effect of moisture, temperature, and inoculum size on the production of antioxidant peptides and proteases by A. oryzae IOC3999 through solid-state fermentation (SSF) of chicken viscera meal. As a result, the process conditions strongly influenced protease production and antioxidant activity of the fermented products. A global analysis of the results indi...

Implementation of cytochrome c proteins and carbon nanotubes hybrids in bioelectrodes towards bioelectrochemical systems applications
Bioprocess Biosyst Eng. 2023 Nov 3. doi: 10.1007/s00449-023-02933-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMultiheme cytochrome c (Cyt c) can function as a redox protein on electrode to accomplish bioelectrocatalysis. However, the direct electron transfer (DET) between the redox site of Cyt c and electrode is low due to the large coupling distance. A close proximity or a connection pathway from the deeply buried active site to the protein surface can be established by modifying the electrode with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to improve the DET. Therefore, the isolated Cyt c has been assembled or casted with CNTs by various processes to...
