Acceleration of the biodegradation of cationic polyacrylamide by the coupling effect of thermophilic microorganisms and high temperature in hyperthermophilic composting
In this study, the effects of HTC and conventional thermophilic composting (CTC) on CPAM in sludge were compared and analyzed. At the end of HTC and CTC, the concentrations of CPAM were 278.96 mg kg-1 and 533.89 mg kg-1, respectively, and the removal rates were 72.17% and 46.61%, respectively. The coupling effect of thermophilic microorganisms and high temperature improved the efficiency of HTC and accelerated the biodegradation of CPAM. The diversity and composition of microbial community changed dramatically during HTC. Geobacillus, Thermobispora, Pseudomonas, Brevundimonas, and Bacillus were the dominant bacteria respon...

Formulation of silver nanoparticles using Duabanga grandiflora leaf extract and evaluation of their versatile therapeutic applications
Bioprocess Biosyst Eng. 2024 Feb 29. doi: 10.1007/s00449-024-02975-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe current research focused on the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Duabanga grandiflora leaf extract. The green synthesis of AgNPs was confirmed by the surface plasmon resonance band at 453 nm in a UV-Visible analysis. The formulated AgNPs had a diameter of around 99.72 nm with a spherical shape. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum revealed the bio-reducing potential of phytochemicals present in D. grandiflora, which fundamentally influenced the synthesis of AgNPs. Zeta potential, dynamic light ...

Handling the inhibitory role of product accumulation during sophorolipid fermentation in a bubble column reactor with an in situ foam recovery
Bioprocess Biosyst Eng. 2024 Feb 29. doi: 10.1007/s00449-024-02970-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSophorolipid (SL) production by Candida catenulata from sunflower fatty acids was studied in a bubble column reactor (BCR). The specific oxygen uptake rate was 0.021 mg gcell-1 min-1 which indicates the importance of aeration in SL biosynthesis. The measurement of oxygen transfer rate (OTR) in the BCR showed a satisfactory OTR value of about 0.093 min-1 in the system. However, further SL production was stopped after 30 h in the BCR mainly due to the product accumulation in the culture and its inhibitory effects on cell growt...

Biomass productivity and characterization of Tetradesmus obliquus grown in a hybrid photobioreactor
In this study, the effects of CO2 addition on the growth performance and biochemical composition of the green microalga Tetradesmus obliquus cultured in a hybrid algal production system (HAPS) were investigated. The HAPS combines the characteristics of tubular photobioreactors (towards a better carbon dioxide dissolution coefficient) with thin-layer cascade system (with a higher surface-to-volume ratio). Experimental batches were conducted with and without CO2 addition, and evaluated in terms of productivity and biomass characteristics (elemental composition, protein and lipid contents, pigments and fatty acids profiles). ...

Facilitating nitrification and biofilm formation of Vibrio sp. by N-acyl-homoserine lactones in high salinity environment
This study evaluated the roles and release patterns of AHLs in Vibrio sp. LV-Q1 under high salinity condition. Results showed that Vibrio sp. primarily secretes five AHLs, and the AHLs activity is strongly correlated with the bacterial density. Exogenous C10-HSL and 3OC10-HSL were found to significantly enhance ammonium removal, while making a minor contribution to the growth rate. Both the C10-HSL and 3OC10-HSL promoted the biofilm formation of Vibrio sp. with an enhancement of 1.64 and 1.78 times, respectively. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) observations confirmed the...
