Green synthesis of zinc and nickel dual-doped cerium oxide nanoparticles: antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity effects
Bioprocess Biosyst Eng. 2023 Sep 12. doi: 10.1007/s00449-023-02920-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2-NPs) and Zn-Ni dual-doped CeO2-NPs were synthesized through a green approach by the implication of zucchini peel (Cucurbita pepo) extract as a capping and reduction agent. All the synthesized samples were studied by the results of FTIR, UV-Vis, XRD, and FESEM/EDAX/PSA analyses. The Zn-Ni dual-doped CeO2-NPs contained a spherical morphology and their size was observed to increase at higher temperatures. The conducted MTT assay on the Huh-7 cell line displayed 50% of cells annihilation as a res...

Performance and mechanism of co-culture of Monascus purpureus, Lacticaseibacillus casei, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae to enhance lovastatin production and lipid-lowering effects
Bioprocess Biosyst Eng. 2023 Sep 9. doi: 10.1007/s00449-023-02903-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo facilitate lipid-lowering effects, a lovastatin-producing microbial co-culture system (LPMCS) was constituted with a novel strain Monascus purpureus R5 in combination with Lacticaseibacillus casei S5 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae J7, which increased lovastatin production by 54.21% compared with the single strain R5. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) optimization indicated lovastatin yield peaked at 7.43 mg/g with a fermentation time of 13.88 d, water content of 50.5%, and inoculum ratio of 10.27%. Meanwhile, lovastatin in ...

Solvent-free enzymatic synthesis and evaluation of vanillyl propionate as an effective and biocompatible preservative
Bioprocess Biosyst Eng. 2023 Sep 8. doi: 10.1007/s00449-023-02921-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPreservatives are chemicals added to protect products against microbial spoilage, and thus are indispensable for pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and foods. Due to growing concerns about human health and environments in conventional chemical preservatives, many companies have been seeking safe and effective alternatives that can be produced through environment-friendly processes. In this work, in order to develop effective and safe preservatives from plants, we attempt solvent-free lipase-catalyzed transesterification of vanillyl ...

Investigation of a membrane bioreactor's performances in treating sunflower oil refinery wastewater containing high oleic acid at different SRTs
This study investigated the MBR performance, sludge morphology, and membrane fouling potential in treating sunflower oil refinery wastewater containing high oleic acid at three different SRTs of 10 days, 40 days, and infinite. The analysis of mixed liquor morphology including sludge volume index, PSD, EPS, and SMP showed that the sludge flocs compressibility and bioflocculation considerably improved at 40-days SRT. Additionally, at this SRT, the mixed liquor O&G, COD, and SMP accumulation were low, and the microbial activity and COD removal were enhanced. The gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis results confir...

Degradation of 2,4-DCP by immobilized laccase on modified biochar carrier
Bioprocess Biosyst Eng. 2023 Sep 1. doi: 10.1007/s00449-023-02922-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRape straw was used as the raw material for the biochar in this study, which was then changed using acid, alkali, and magnetic techniques. The laccase was attached using the adsorptions-crosslinking process, and the three modified biochars served as the carriers. The ideal circumstances for laccase immobilization were explored, and both biochar and immobilized laccase's characteristics were examined. The removal of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) by immobilized laccase from modified biochar and its degradation products were rese...
