Risk Factors for Progression to Referable Diabetic Eye Disease in People With Diabetes Mellitus in Auckland, New Zealand: A 12-Year Retrospective Cohort Analysis
Conclusions: Referable diabetic eye disease at the first screening and after 4 years of follow-up is uncommon. Lengthening of the screening intervals for people with no or mild diabetic eye disease at first screening assessment could be considered. (Source: Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology)

Potential Protective Role of TRPM7 and Involvement of PKC/ERK Pathway in Blue Light–Induced Apoptosis in Retinal Pigment Epithelium Cells in Vitro
Purpose: Blue light triggers apoptosis of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells and causes retinal damage. The aim of this study was to elucidate the protective role of transient receptor potential melastatin 7 (TRPM7) in photodamaged RPE cells. Methods: RPE cells were isolated from Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats and exposed to varying intensities of blue light (500–5000 lux) in vitro. Cell proliferation and metabolic activity were respectively assessed by bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT...

Comparison of Outcomes Following Glaucoma Drainage Tube Surgery Between Primary and Secondary Glaucomas, and Between Phakic and Pseudophakic eyes
Purpose: To report outcomes of glaucoma drainage device (GDD) surgery based on primary or secondary glaucoma diagnosis and lens status. Design: Single-center, retrospective, consecutive cohort study. Methods: University of Florida patients aged 18 to 93 years who underwent nonvalved GDD surgery between 1996 and 2015 with a minimum of 1-year follow-up were examined. Of the 186 eyes of 186 patients enrolled, 108 had a primary glaucoma and 78 a secondary glaucoma diagnosis. Excluding 13 aphakic patients, 57 eyes were phakic and 116 pseudophakic. Mean intraocular pressure (IOP), mean number of medications, vi...

A Modified Technique in Applying Sponge Soaked with Mitomycin C in Trabeculectomy
Trabeculectomy with adjunctive use of Mitomycin C (MMC) has been a benchmark for glaucoma filtration surgery for decades. However, there are many variations in the ways that the sponges soaked with MMC are applied during the trabeculectomy surgery. We herein describe our way of placing the MMC-soaked sponges to improve the safety and efficacy of the trabeculectomy. The sponges are placed vertically and posteriorly with the long side of the sponge perpendicular to the limbus, not parallel. This will reduce the size of the conjunctival wound at the limbus to preserve more virgin conjunctiva that can be used for repeated trab...

Comparison Between an Intraocular Lens With Extended Depth of Focus (Tecnis Symfony ZXR00) and a New Monofocal Intraocular Lens With Enhanced Intermediate Vision (Tecnis Eyhance ICB00)
This study compared the extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lens (IOL) (ZXR00; Tecnis Symfony, Johnson & Johnson Vision, Santa Ana, CA, US) to a novel, higher-order aspheric monofocal IOL (ICB00; Tecnis Eyhance, Johnson & Johnson Vision, Santa Ana, CA, US) which uses the same platform and material. Methods: Medical records of patients undergoing cataract surgery with ZXR00 or ICB00 implantation between March 2020 and January 2021 and with the data available for the 3-month visit were reviewed. The uncorrected near, intermediate, and distance visual acuity (VA); corrected distance VA; and optical quality param...

Assessment and Management of Dry Eye Disease and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction: Providing a Singapore Framework
This article covers the assessment of patient medical history and ask triage questions to identify local and systemic causes of dry eye disease (DED), excluding other possible causes, as well as the risk factors for DED and ocular surface inflammation. Evaluation of clinical signs to establish the diagnosis of DED and differentiation from other causes of irritable, red eyes are described. Tests for understanding the underlying disease processes and severity of DED are also presented. Management of dry eye should involve patient education and engagement. Information about the natural history and chronic nature of DED sho...

COVID-19: Update on Its Ocular Involvements, and Complications From Its Treatments and Vaccinations
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) came under the attention of the international medical community when China first notified the World Health Organization of a pneumonia outbreak of then-unknown etiology in Wuhan in December 2019. Since then, COVID-19 caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has appalled the world by spreading at a pandemic speed. Although ophthalmologists do not directly engage in the clinical care of COVID-19 patients, the ophthalmology community has become aware of the close ties between its practice and the pandemic. Not only are ophthalmologists at heightened ris...
