Emerging Therapies in Nonexudative Age-Related Macular Degeneration in 2020
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the most common causes of severe vision loss in the developed world. Advanced forms of AMD are seen in primarily 2 types, exudative AMD involving the presence of choroidal neovascularization and nonexudative or dry AMD with geographic atrophy. For the latter, the combination of vitamins and minerals known as the Age-Related Eye Disease Study-2 formulation has been shown to decrease the rate of progression of nonexudative to exudative AMD, as no other treatments are currently approved for nonexudative AMD. This review will highlight upcoming treatments for nonexudative AMD. S...

Stem-Cell Therapy Following High-Dose Chemotherapy in Advanced Retinoblastoma: A Systematic Review
Conclusions: HDCT-SCT is a promising treatment option in patients with advanced retinoblastoma. The use of HDCT-SCT in CNS metastases needs to be carefully considered, possibly by adding thiotepa or topotecan to improve tumor control. Further randomized clinical trials are needed to draw firm conclusion regarding its safety and efficacy. (Source: Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology)

A Systematic Review on Three Major Types of Scleral-Fixated Intraocular Lens Implantation
Conclusions: Glued SFIOL had the fewest IOL-related complications and the lowest endothelial cell loss. Sutured SFIOL carried the highest IOL-related complications, whereas sutureless, glueless SFIOL was associated with the greatest endothelial cell loss. (Source: Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology)

Digital Transformation in Ophthalmic Clinical Care During the COVID-19 Pandemic
COVID-19 has placed unprecedented pressure on health systems globally, whereas simultaneously stimulating unprecedented levels of transformation. Here, we review digital adoption that has taken place during the pandemic to drive improvements in ophthalmic clinical care, with a specific focus on out-of-hospital triage and services, clinical assessment, patient management, and use of electronic health records. We show that although there have been some successes, shortcomings in technology infrastructure prepandemic became only more apparent and consequential as COVID-19 progressed. Through our review, we emphasize the need ...

Outcomes of Intravenous Chemotherapy (Chemoreduction) for Retinoblastoma Based on Patient Age in 964 Eyes of 554 Patients
This study included 964 eyes of 554 patients treated with chemoreduction at Ocular Oncology Service at Wills Eye Hospital. Patients received 6 monthly cycles of standard chemoreduction. Additional therapies for tumor control were performed as needed. Results: Of 964 eyes, a comparison by age group (24 months) revealed more advanced age group with higher frequency of group E tumor (15% vs. 25% vs. 32% vs. 39%, P  (Source: Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology)

Characteristics and Survival Outcomes of Second Primary Cancers in Long-term Retinoblastoma Survivors
Conclusions: In contrast to previous studies, we found a broader spectrum of second primary cancer types. All RB survivors, regardless of unilateral or bilateral status, should undergo strict cancer surveillance particularly as they approach the fourth decade of life. Effectiveness of SB5, an Adalimumab Biosimilar, in Patients With Noninfectious Uveitis: A Real-Life Monocentric Experience
Purpose: Several concerns have arisen with biosimilars in terms of immunogenicity, safety issues, loss of efficacy, and extrapolation to other indications. The study aim was to evaluate the efficacy of SB5, an adalimumab biosimilar, in noninfectious uveitis (NIU). Design: Retrospective nonrandomized study. Methods: Data from patients with refractory NIU treated with SB5 (Imraldi, Biogen) were analyzed at baseline, 3 months after SB5 initiation and at the last follow-up in terms of uveitis relapses, occurrence of retinal vasculitis, resolution of uveitic macular edema (UME), best-corrected visual acuity, g...

Microbial Keratitis After Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking for Corneal Ectasia
Conclusions: Post-CXL microbial keratitis was predominately associated with gram-positive bacteria and in some cases delayed epithelialization. Microbial keratitis post-CXL may lead to moderate to poor patient outcomes. (Source: Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology)
