Effects of Highly Palatable Diet on motivation for food and resistance to punishment in rats: Role of sex and age of exposure
In this study, we investigated the persistent effects of an intermittent 8-week exposure to HPD in male and female rats as a function of age of exposure (adult and adolescent). We found that intermittent exposure to HPD did not alter body weight, but it affected consumption of standard food during the time of exposure in all groups. In addition, in adults, HPD produced a decrease in the initial baseline responding in FR1 schedules, an effect that persisted for 4 weeks in males but not in female rats. However, we found that exposure to HPD did not affect resistance to punishment measured by progressive shock strength break ...

Analysis of green word-of-mouth advertising behavior of organic food consumers
In this study, 400 organic saffron consumers were grouped using a self-organizing map (SOM) neural network based on consumer neobehavioristic theory, and then, using decision trees, consumer behavior rules were extracted for participating in the WOM for each group. According to the results, less than fifty percent of consumers in each of the four market segments are willing to participate in WOM advertising for organic saffron. A lack of awareness of the characteristics of organic saffron is also found to be the main reason for consumers' reluctance to recommend organic saffron to others. Mass-media advertising is an effec...

The association between objective and subjective oral health conditions and the presence of anorexia of aging among Japanese older Adults < sup > 1 < /sup >
This study aimed to evaluate the association between objective and subjective oral health and anorexia among independent older adults. This cross-sectional study targeted independent older adults aged ≥65 years who participated in the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study conducted in 2022. The outcome variable was the presence of anorexia, as assessed by the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire. Exposure variables were dental status (≥20 teeth, 10-19 teeth with/without dentures, and 0-9 teeth with/without dentures) as objective oral health and oral health-related quality of life measured by five items of the ...

Exploring the spatial mental associations of distinct food types
Appetite. 2024 Apr 3:107337. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2024.107337. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrevious research explored the spatial representations of healthy low-calorie and unhealthy high-calorie food items, revealing an association of healthy low-calorie food with left and top sides, and unhealthy/high-calorie food with right and top sides. This association, namely side bias, was limited to these specific categories leaving the representations of healthy high-calorie and unhealthy low-calorie food categories yet to be explored. Present study was designed to examine the spatial representation of four food categories (unh...

Ecological momentary assessment of digital food and beverage marketing exposure and impact in young adults: A feasibility study
Appetite. 2024 Apr 3;197:107338. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2024.107338. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUnhealthy food marketing is contributing to the obesity epidemic, but real-time insights into the mechanisms of this relationship are under-studied. Digital marketing is growing and following food and beverage (F&B) brands on social media is common, but measurement of exposure and impact of such marketing presents novel challenges. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of collecting data on exposure and impact of digital F&B marketing (DFM) using a smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA) meth...

Food parenting at-home vs. in restaurants among African American parents of 3-to-8-year-old children
This study sought to examine feeding styles at-home and in restaurants among African American parents. 52 African American parents with a 3-to-8-year-old child (M = 35.6 years, 86% mothers, 57% annual household income <$50,000, 57% Associate's degree or higher) who regularly dined at restaurants completed an online survey in winter 2022-2023. Parents reported on demographics, anthropometrics, and their feeding styles at home and in restaurants via The Caregiver's Feeding Style Questionnaire. Findings indicated that the indulgent style was the most common overall. Indulgent styles were more prevalent in restaurants (χ2 ...

Relation of preconception eating behaviours to dietary pattern trajectories and gestational weight gain from preconception to late pregnancy
Appetite. 2024 Apr 2:107336. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2024.107336. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStudies examining preconception eating behaviours with longitudinal dietary patterns from preconception to late pregnancy as well as gestational weight gain (GWG) are limited. We derived dietary pattern trajectories from preconception to late-pregnancy, and related preconception eating behaviours to these trajectories and GWG. Preconception eating behaviours were assessed using the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire measuring cognitive restraint (CR) - conscious restriction of food intake, emotional eating (EE) - overeating in respo...
