Growth, sex reversal pattern, and reproductive characteristics of Barramundi ( < em > Lates calcarifer < /em > ) broodstock candidates reared in floating cages
Anim Biotechnol. 2023 Oct 13:1-9. doi: 10.1080/10495398.2023.2267621. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSex reversal of male to female is a characteristic of barramundi (Lates calcarifer), which is affected by several factors, thereby changing the broodstock population. A study was conducted in floating cages in Langkawi, Malaysia, to determine the weight point at the onset of the sex reversal phenomena. A total of 75 female and 55 male adult individuals (3-4 weeks of age) were sampled from the fish cultured in cages to ascertain their sex at different weights. The water temperature and salinity values were 29.82 °C and 33.12...

The variation in the beta-casein genotypes and its effect on milk yield and genomic values in Holstein-Friesian cows
Anim Biotechnol. 2023 Oct 13:1-10. doi: 10.1080/10495398.2023.2267614. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe A2 milk marker is gaining popularity worldwide; thus, many farms plan to convert their dairy cattle herds to the A2A2 genotype. Variation in beta-casein genotypes needs to be monitored in large dairy cattle populations. Therefore we aimed to evaluate the genotypic distributions, population genetics, and diversity parameters in Holstein-Friesian cows. A total of 1200 cattle were genotyped using the Affymetrix® Axiom® array system. We performed an association analysis regarding the CSN2 genotypes and phenotypic traits, ...

Isolation and characterization of biosurfactant-producing microbes isolated from the gastrointestinal system of broiler birds fed a commercial diet
Anim Biotechnol. 2023 Oct 10:1-13. doi: 10.1080/10495398.2023.2263771. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAntimicrobial drug resistance (AMR) from improper use of antibiotics in various livestock products is a growing hazard for humans worldwide, with current death rate in excess of 700,000 per annum linked to the problem. Microorganisms are a rich source of structurally distinct bioactive compounds designed to protect the microbes and can offset AMR challenge. A study was conducted at Chinhoyi University of Technology to isolate, identify and characterize biosurfactant secreting microbes from broiler bird's gastrointestinal tr...

Effect of alfalfa supplementary change dietary non-fibrous carbohydrate (NFC) to neutral detergent fiber (NDF) ratio on rumen fermentation and microbial function in Gansu alpine fine wool sheep ( < em > Ovis aries < /em > )
This study evaluated the effects of alfalfa hay supplementary change dietary non-fibrous carbohydrate/neutral detergent fiber (NFC/NDF) ratios on rumen fermentation and microbial function of Gansu alpine fine wool sheep during extreme cold season. 120 ewes (3-4 yrs) with an average body weight of 28.71 ± 1.22 kg were allocated randomly into three treatments, and fed NFC/NDF of 1.92 (H group), 1.11 (M group), and 0.68 (L group), respectively. This study was conducted for 107 d, including 7 d of adaption to the diets. The rumen fermentation parameters and microbial characteristics were measured after the end of feeding tria...

Effects of JUNCAO < em > Ganoderma lucidum < /em > polysaccharide peptide on slaughter performance and intestinal health of Minxinan black rabbits
In conclusion, although dietary JCGLPP supplementation could not improve slaughter performance of Minxinan black rabbits, it could improve cecal fermentation parameters and intestinal flora structure and composition of Minxinan black rabbits to a certain extent. Our results revealed that 100 mg·kg-1 might be the optimal concentration obtained in dietary JCGLPP supplementation, which provided ideas and feasibility for drug combination.PMID:37768126 | DOI:10.1080/10495398.2023.2259436 (Source: Animal Biotechnology)
