CONCLUSIONS: Head and neck cancers are not uncommon and majority of patients present late with advanced stage cancer. Hence, public awareness, early diagnosis with cost-effective treatment and regular follow-up are needed to improve outcomes of these patients in our society.PMID:38694395 | PMC:PMC11060235 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001918 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Richter supraumbilical hernia managed with invagination: a case report
CONCLUSION: Diagnosis of Richter's hernia demands higher suspicion, particularly in patients with predisposing factors like a history of minimally invasive surgery. Prompt surgical intervention is crucial for reducing mortality and enhancing prognosis, with invagination alone being adequate if ischaemia is confined and mesh placement is unnecessary.PMID:38694393 | PMC:PMC11060237 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001943 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Super giant basal cell carcinoma: a comprehensive systematic review
Ann Med Surg (Lond). 2024 Mar 19;86(5):2935-2939. doi: 10.1097/MS9.0000000000001958. eCollection 2024 May.ABSTRACTSuper giant basal cell carcinoma (SGBCC), defined as greater than 20 cm in diameter, is a rare oncological entity, with scarce literature. The authors conducted a review to characterize SGBCC, specifically with regards to age, sex predilection, risk factors, geographical location, body site, metastasis, and treatment. A systematic literature search was conducted from 1972 to 2023. All abstracts, studies, and citations were reviewed. The initial result showed 47 281 articles and were filtered down for human, ski...

Prevalence, types, and characteristics of headache in Behcets disease without involvement of the central nervous system in the Syrian population: a case-cohort study
CONCLUSION: Headache should not be considered a predictor for neurological involvement among BD patients. Additional attention to BD patients or the specific treatment for headaches is not required and does not differ from the general population.PMID:38694392 | PMC:PMC11060300 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001903 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Smoking behaviour in post-acute myocardial infarction patients: cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Multinomial logistic regression analysis identified current smoking as a significant predictor of intention to quit in the preparation and contemplation stages. Overall, this study underscores the importance of considering smoking behaviour when evaluating the intention to quit smoking post-MI and highlights the need for tailored interventions and support strategies to address smoking cessation in this population. These findings offer valuable insights for the development of effective strategies aimed at reducing persistent smoking following MI and improving patient outcomes.PMID:38694391 | PMC:PMC11060240 | DO...

Can modulation of gut microbiota affect anthropometric indices in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease? An umbrella meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the present umbrella meta-analysis showed that although modulation of gut microbiota by administration of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics had promising effects on BMI, no significant change was observed in the WC and weight of the patients. No sufficient data were available for other anthropometric indices including waist-to-hip ratio and waist-to-height ratio and future meta-analyses should be done in this regard.PMID:38694388 | PMC:PMC11060227 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001740 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

ST2 levels and neurodegenerative diseases: is this a significant relation?
Ann Med Surg (Lond). 2024 Mar 12;86(5):2812-2817. doi: 10.1097/MS9.0000000000001939. eCollection 2024 May.ABSTRACTInterleukin-33 (IL-33), belonging to the interleukin-1 cytokine family, has a decoy receptor soluble ST2 (sST2). IL-33 is found in oligodendrocytes and astrocytes and is involved in central nervous system healing and repair, whereas ST2 is found in microglia and astrocytes. Some studies have found a link between changes in the IL-33/ST2 pathway and neurodegenerative disorders. This review article investigates the relationship between the interleukin-33 (IL-33)/ST2 pathway and neurodegenerative disorders. It was...

Fibrocartilaginous embolism: a rare cause of cervical spine infarction
CONCLUSION: When a practitioner suspects that a patient may have fibrocartilaginous embolism (FCE), they should take the patient's history and do a neurological examination. An MRI is required since it is thought to be the most accurate method of diagnosing FCE.PMID:38694385 | PMC:PMC11060198 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000002005 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Brentuximab-induced pneumonitis and organizing pneumonia: a case report with literiture review
CONCLUSION: Physicians must have a high index of suspicion for BV-induced pneumonitis, hence, early recognition with subsequent holding of the causative agent, initiation of immunosuppression with steroids, and occasionally steroid-sparing medications, prevent an otherwise fatal outcome.PMID:38694384 | PMC:PMC11060267 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001878 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Evaluation of non-invasive diagnostic tools for diarrhea: a systematic review of point-of-care tests and biomarkers
CONCLUSION: PCR proved the ideal POC test for rapid diarrhea diagnosis, while the procalcitonin biomarker helps differentiate inflammatory from non-inflammatory diarrhea. Other reviewed tools also demonstrated promising diagnostic performance, though improvements in sensitivity, specificity, and usability are still needed.PMID:38694383 | PMC:PMC11060204 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001946 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Anti-coagulants-induced intracranial hemorrhage managed with decompressive craniectomy: a case report of lesson learned
CONCLUSION: In the background of the low prevalence of OACs-induced ICH, there is an absence of a robust guiding treatment protocol. Furthermore, there exist minimal reported cases which underwent surgical intervention and resulted in a good prognosis.PMID:38694382 | PMC:PMC11060273 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001996 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Angiodysplasia simulating variceal bleeding: a challenging case report of diagnosis and intervention
CONCLUSION: This case report elucidates the diagnostic and therapeutic journey in managing a patient with angiodysplasia masquerading as variceal bleeding. It emphasizes the importance of considering vascular anomalies without typical signs and the significance of individualized interventions for optimal patient outcomes. The 2-year follow-up without recurrence signifies the successful management of the case.PMID:38694381 | PMC:PMC11060247 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001963 (Source: Annals of Medicine)
