What specialty are you most interested in so far?
I've always been fascinated with infectious diseases from a virology standpoint and the easy transition into epidemiology and public health opportunities. Just a shame you have to subspecialize after IM and then take a paycut. Psychiatry is also something that's been hovering on my mind lately but I haven't been able to find shadowing opportunities so I'll be waiting until M1 when it'll be easier to find observational opportunities. Why won't Infectious Disease evaluate this possible Lyme Disease patient?
Patient is a 25 year old guy who found several ticks attached while biking/camping in an area with high lyme prevalence. Around 1 month later, he developed flu-like symptoms but doesn't remember seeing the EM rash. 3 months later he is now experiencing fatigue, malaise, exertional chest "heaviness", palpitations, dizziness. Western blot is IgG positive for Lyme. He has never been treated for Lyme before. His primary care is an NP who referred him to Infectious Disease, but when he... Likelihood of Contracting Life Long Diseases from Healthcare Work
How often do healthcare workers contract lifelong infectious diseases from working in health care. I'm talking about things like hepatitis and HIV. I recently learned that a friend that I'm very close to has one of these diseases and it makes me scared to hug them in case they might have tiny open sores. Etc. Is this worry reasonable in medicine? I read a thread a while back of surgeons putting themselves in harm's way often when blood splatters from operations (Source: Student Doctor Network)

USUHS Infectious Diseases Quality (MD/PhD)
Hi all, I intend to pursue a career as a physician-scientist, potentially in the field of infectious diseases. I was wondering if anyone could offer some perspective on the quality of the USUHS ID program, both MD and PhD. Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

DARTMOUTH vs. U. MIAMI vs. RUSH
Hi everyone, I would love to hear your thoughts! Info: I want to match either in Massachusetts or Georgia (family ties to both), but prefer to be in the south long term. I'm interested in Emergency Medicine/Trauma or OB/GYN, but do not want to rule out Derm/Infectious Disease or whatever may absorb my attention. I am very used to the cold, but really wanted to end up in Georgia this cycle (warm, but it can get chilly outside = perfect) - that clearly did not work out [emoji28]. I am very... DARTMOUTH vs. U. [Advice] Getting Cold Feet About Medical School Because Of Public Health Interests, Any Input?
I have been accepted into medical schools (in NC, Va, and NY) which I was very excited about. However, at the same time, over the past year or so I have been accumulating an increasing interest in public health and epidemiology. I've worked as a scribe and MA for 3-4 years, have done wet lab work while in school for 3 years, and have been working in a infectious disease computational epidemiology lab for the past 6-8 months. I wasn't the biggest fan of wet lab research. However, working in... [Advice] Getting Cold Feet About Medical School Because Of Public Health Interests, Any Input? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

CLS experience for MD/PHD?
Hello. I’m currently a Clinical Laboratory Scientist and am wondering what impact this would have on an MD/PHD application. I work in infectious disease doing mostly viral testing on patient specimens, but do not interact with patients or do research. It is primarily a PCR lab. I’m mostly wondering whether this lab experience will help me in the “research/clinical experience” department since all I have is one year of research in a yeast lab, and no publications or patient interaction. I... CLS experience for MD/PHD? (Source: Student Doctor Network)
