Likelihood of Contracting Life Long Diseases from Healthcare Work

How often do healthcare workers contract lifelong infectious diseases from working in health care. I'm talking about things like hepatitis and HIV. I recently learned that a friend that I'm very close to has one of these diseases and it makes me scared to hug them in case they might have tiny open sores. Etc. Is this worry reasonable in medicine? I read a thread a while back of surgeons putting themselves in harm's way often when blood splatters from operations
