Taking off two years for research
I'm currently taking a year off after MS3 and doing a really awesome research program in public health and infectious disease. I just got offered funding for an additional year to continue my projects, which I would love to do as this is basically like a dream job. The problem is that during my year off, my interests have shifted to wanting to do general surgery. Ideally I would love to continue my research for another year then put it behind me and go all in on surgery. Any thoughts to how... Taking off two years for research (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Breaking Down Prejudices in Specialists
I wonder how some of the more senior Faculty and Attendings would counsel me on how to address the following: HIV Associated Atherosclerosis, and the stigma many physician specialists view HIV, particularly Cardiologists, and hence not wanting to deal with this population. An Infectious Disease Physician at the university has confided in me that HIV is perceived as a stigma by many medical specialists, going as far as telling me recently that there is a 'dark history' at my teaching... MD after PhD in Chemistry
I am seriously considering attend a medical school after I'm done with my PhD in Chemistry. I have published in the #1 peer-reviewed ACS (American Chemical Society) journal in my field, (first authorship) and my ultimate goal is to publish in Science or Nature, or Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS). The projects I'm currently working on right now is very close related to infectious diseases and drugs development. When I'm done with my... MD after PhD in Chemistry (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Do all schools want you to go into primary care?
I realize the simple answer is no. But I have heard a lot of emphasis on this given our shortage of primary care docs, and more than a few schools specifically mention it in their mission statement. I personally don't want to be a primary care doctor. I've shadowed one, I have great respect for it, but it's not for me. That may change in medical school, but right now I am far more interested in infectious disease. Most of my story, personal statement, shadowing, research, and even letter... What Career Opportunities are Available in Public Health
by NicholasSmith00 (Posted Sat May 20, 2017 3:34 pm) Pnetra, thank you so much for that reply. Very thorough and it helps. Can you speak to what an MD with a MPH can do specifically? Is there something they can do within the fields of Sex Ed/Infectious Diseases/STIs/Community Health? This question is attempting to help me decide if I'm embarking on the right path before I go through all the schooling. What Career Opportunities are Available in Public Health
by NicholasSmith00 (Posted Mon May 08, 2017 10:39 am) I'm really interested in getting involved in public health in California. I fell in love with the free clinic model and infectious diseases a few years ago when I started using them myself.Ideally I want to work with the public as a doctor, answering sex education questions, and coordinating efforts on a local scale to combat infectious diseases.I'm considering going the direction of Med School and getting a Masters in Public Health. However, I'm not exactly sure what careers are available in public health as a doctor with a Masters in PH.I've also heard that a nurse wi...

BCPS: Pharmacotherapy and Infectious Disease?
So now that the BCPS has approved Infectious Disease as a specialty, do you guys that are specialists or managers recommend getting both Pharmacotherapy and Infectious Disease to be more well rounded even though my primary interest is infectious disease? Or should I just wait and take the infectious disease test once it is offered? Thank you for your input. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
