Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 3666: Biosynthesis of Silver Nanoparticles and Exploring Their Potential of Reducing the Contamination of the In Vitro Culture Media and Inducing the Callus Growth of Rumex nervosus Explants
Kahkashan Perveen Among biological methods, green synthesis of the nanomaterials using plant extracts was shown to be an environmentally friendly, economical, and simple approach. In the current study, the biogenic synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was achieved using the leaf extract of Hibiscus tiliaceus, in order to prevent the contamination of the tissue culture media and induce callus growth. The nanostructures of the fabricated AgNPs were characterized using UV–visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infra-red spectra (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ...

Cobalt oxide nanoparticles: An effective growth promoter of Arabidopsis plants and nano-pesticide against bacterial leaf blight pathogen in rice
Ecotoxicol Environ Saf. 2023 Apr 20;257:114935. doi: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2023.114935. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecently, the application of cobalt oxide nanoparticles (Co3O4NPs) has gained popularity owing to its magnetic, catalytic, optical, antimicrobial, and biomedical properties. However, studies on its use as a crop protection agent and its effect on photosynthetic apparatus are yet to be reported. Here, Co3O4NPs were first green synthesized using Hibiscus rosa-sinensis flower extract and were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission/scan...

Ultrasound application for the decontamination of roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) seeds: Influence on fungal inhibition and seed quality
Ultrason Sonochem. 2023 Apr 10;95:106404. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2023.106404. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSeed decay is a major problem caused by pathogens that adversely affect seed yield and quality in agricultural production. Herein, the effect of 28 KHz ultrasound treatment for 20, 40 and 60 min and 1.5% sodium hypochlorite solution for 20 min was assessed for the decontamination of roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) seeds. In addition, seed germination indices, seedling growth traits, total phenolic content and the activity of defense-related enzymes, viz. peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, catalase and malondialdehyd...

Biosorption of bioactive compounds in bacterial nanocellulose: Mechanisms and physical-chemical properties
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Apr 11:124349. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.124349. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBacterial cellulose (BC) is a biomaterial produced by Gluconacetobacter xylinus, with wide applicability in different areas, such as biomedical, pharmaceutical, and food. BC production is usually carried out in a medium containing phenolic compounds (PC), such as teas, however, the purification process leads to the loss of such bioactive. Thus, the innovation of this research consists of the reincorporation of PC after the purification of the BC matrices through the biosorption process. In this context, the effects o...

Therapeutic effect of gossypetin against paraquat-induced testicular damage in male rats: a histological and biochemical study
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Mar 20. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-26469-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTParaquat (PQ) is an organic compound, which is commonly used as a herbicide in the agriculture sector, and it is also known to stimulate critical damages in the male reproductive system. Gossypetin (GPTN) is one of important members of the flavonoid family, which is an essential compound in flowers and calyx of Hibiscus sabdariffa with potential pharmacological properties. The current investigation was aimed to examine the ameliorative potential of GPTN against PQ-instigated testicular damages. Adult male Sprague-Dawley ...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 2628: Optimization of the Extraction of Antioxidant Compounds from Roselle Hibiscus Calyxes (Hibiscus sabdariffa), as a Source of Nutraceutical Beverages
In this study, a Box-Behnken experimental design has been used to optimize the antioxidant activity, considering four variables: ethanol:water ratio, temperature, extraction time, and solvent:solid ratio. The experiment comprises 27 experiments and 3 repetitions at the central point. The results are described by surface response analysis and a second-degree polynomial equation. The model explains 87% of the variation in the response. The maximum antioxidant activity is yielded when 1% solids are extracted in 35.5% ethanol at 60 °C for 33 min. Finally, a nutritional functional supplement of 495 µmo...

Properties of Roselle and alizarin mixed loaded gelatin films as a pH ‐sensing indicator for shrimp freshness monitoring
An intelligent pH-sensing indicator containing Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) (ROS) anthocyanin and alizarin (ALZ) was developed and characterized as on-package indicator tags to check the shrimp freshness during the storing at 4 °C. AbstractAn intelligent pH-sensing indicator containing Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) (ROS) anthocyanin and alizarin (ALZ) was developed and characterized as on-package indicator tags to check the shrimp freshness during the storing at 4 °C. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis showed that ROS and ALZ were successfully immobilized in the gelatin–glycerol film-forming substrate. ...
