Blood flow assessment technology in aortic surgery: a narrative review
CONCLUSIONS: Blood flow assessment and computational modeling can evaluate hemodynamics and flow patterns by visualizing blood flow and calculating biomechanical forces in patients with aortic disease. We anticipate that blood flow assessment will become an essential tool in the treatment planning and understanding of the progression of aortic disease.PMID:38738252 | PMC:PMC11087597 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1795 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)

Health-related quality of life after minimal-invasive treatment of aortic valve stenosis in the elderly
CONCLUSIONS: Although PUMS-SAVR offers better technical outcomes with less permanent pacemaker implantation and less paravalvular leakage than TF-TAVI, it is still associated with more need for transfusion, longer ventilation-and intensive care unit-times, and prolonged hospital stay. In the elderly, PUMS-SAVR achieves inferior quality of life compared to TF-TAVI. Partial sternotomy reveals as the strongest risk factor of perceived health-level post-treatment. It remains to be revealed whether fast-track open heart surgery that maintains a fully intact sternum and allows immediate postoperative extubation-as performed thro...

Early and mid-term outcomes of tricuspid valve surgery in patients with functional tricuspid regurgitation induced by atrial fibrillation
CONCLUSIONS: TV surgery for TR induced by AF showed low surgical mortality and favorable mid-term outcomes. For these patients, early surgery after progress to severe TR can be helpful to decrease the occurrence of TVRE.PMID:38738253 | PMC:PMC11087639 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1776 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)

Acute Aortic Dissection after Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement
Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is a rare and potentially fatal complication associated with transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Due to the paucity of existing institutional data, we sought to assess the incidence of post-implant AAD in patients who underwent TAVR at a single institution. All patients who underwent TAVR from 2013 – 2022 were retrospectively reviewed to identify patients who possessed clinical or radiologic evidence of post-TAVR AAD. Follow-up and survival data were retrieved for all included patients. (Source: The American Journal of Cardiology)

In vivo mitral valve repair for the transplanted donor heart in orthotopic heart transplantation
A 53-year-old woman with the dilated phase of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy underwent orthotopic heart transplantation. The donor heart was evaluated as normal preoperatively without mitral regurgitation or the ... (Source: Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery)

Five-Year Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Outcomes in Chronic Hemodialysis vs. Non-Hemodialysis Patients Using Balloon-Expandable Devices
CONCLUSIONS: TAVR in HD patients had comparable periprocedural mortality but inferior mid-term survival and TAV durability than in non-HD patients. Indications for TAVR in younger HD patients should be carefully determined, considering the possibility of a TAV-in-TAV procedure when early SVD occurs.PMID:38735703 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-24-0050 (Source: Circulation Journal)

Bilateral pulmonary artery banding facilitates the systemic ventricular outflow tract growth for biventricular and univentricular repair candidates of complex arch anomaly
This study aimed to analyze the LVOT growth for biventricular repair candidates with arch anomaly and systemic ventricular outflow tract (SVOT) for univentricular repair candidates with arch anomaly. This retrospective study analyzed 17 patients undergoing initial bPAB followed by arch repair. The Z-scores of LVOT and SVOT were compared between pre-bPAB and pre-arch repair. Patient characteristics, transthoracic echocardiogram data, and PAB circumferences were reviewed. The diameter of the minimum LVOT for biventricular repair (BVR) candidates, the pulmonary valve (neo-aortic valve, neo-AoV) and the pulmonary trunk (the ne...

Performance and outcomes of the SAPIEN 3 Ultra RESILIA transcatheter heart valve in the OCEAN-TAVI registry
CONCLUSIONS: The S3UR has equivalent procedural complications to the S3 but with lower rates of PVL and significantly better valve performance. The better valve performance of the S3UR, particularly in smaller valve sizes, overcomes the remaining issue of balloon-expandable valves after TAVR.PMID:38726714 | DOI:10.4244/EIJ-D-23-00996 (Source: EuroIntervention)
