Clinical and health care utilization variables can predict 90-day hospital re-admission in adults with Crohn ’s disease for point of care risk evaluation
Hospital re-admission for persons with Crohn ’s disease (CD) is a significant contributor to morbidity and healthcare costs. We derived prediction models of risk of 90-day re-hospitalization among persons with ... (Source: BMC Gastroenterology)

Exploring the Efficacy of Selected Allografts in Chronic Wound Healing: Evidence from Murine Models and Clinical Data for a Proposed Treatment Algorithm
Adv Wound Care (New Rochelle). 2024 May 16. doi: 10.1089/wound.2023.0139. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSIGNIFICANCE: Chronic wounds can lead to poor outcomes for patients, with risks including amputation and death. In the United States, chronic wounds affect 2.5% of the population and cost up to $28 billion per year in primary healthcare costs.RECENT ADVANCES: Allograft tissues (dermal, amnion, and amnion/chorion) have shown efficacy in improving healing of chronic, recalcitrant wounds in human patients, as evidenced by multiple clinical trials. Their mechanisms of actions have been relatively understudied, until recently...

Parent SMART: Effects of residential treatment and an adjunctive parenting intervention on behavioral health services utilization
Scant research has examined the impact of residential treatment on adolescent behavioral healthcare utilization post-discharge, even though behavioral healthcare utilization is major driver of healthcare costs. In the primary analyses of a pilot randomized trial, Parent SMART – a technology-assisted intervention for parents of adolescents in residential treatment – was found to improve parental monitoring and parent-adolescent communication, reduce adolescent drinking, and reduce adolescent school-related problems, relative to residential treatment as usual (TAU). Cost, Efficiency and Outcomes of Pulsed Field Ablation versus Thermal Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation: A Real World Study
With the exponential growth of catheter ablation (CA) for atrial fibrillation (AF), there is increasing interest in associated healthcare costs. Pulsed field ablation (PFA) using a single-shot pentaspline multi-electrode catheter has been shown to be safe and effective for AF CA, but its cost efficiency compared to conventional thermal ablation modalities (cryoballoon [CB] or radiofrequency [RF]) has not been evaluated. Economic burden of generalized myasthenia gravis (MG) in the United States and the impact of common comorbidities and acute MG- events
Conclusions: gMG is associated with substantial incremental costs and HRU, with inpatient costs driving the total incremental costs. Costs increased by 20% and 34% among patients with cardiometabolic and psychiatric conditions, respectively, and over 3 times among those with acute MG-related events. gMG is a complex disease requiring management of comorbidities and treatment options that can prevent acute symptomatic events.PMID:38745448 | DOI:10.1080/03007995.2024.2353381 (Source: Current Medical Research and Opinion)

Effect of a fall within three months of admission on delirium in critically Ill elderly patients: a population-based cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: The study reveals that history of falls significantly heighten the risk of delirium and other adverse outcomes in elderly ICU patients, leading to decreased short-term survival rates. This emphasizes the critical need for early interventions and could inform future strategies to manage and prevent these conditions in ICU settings.PMID:38743351 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-024-02740-8 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)
