Healthcare Utilization and Direct Costs Prior to Subspecialty Care in Children with Chronic Pain Compared with Other Chronic Childhood Diseases: A Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: Compared with chronic inflammatory and endocrinologic conditions, pediatric CP and anxiety were associated with substantial burden on the healthcare system prior to subspecialty care, suggesting a need to assess gaps and resources in the management of CP and mental health conditions in the primary care setting.PMID:38582149 | DOI:10.1016/j.jpeds.2024.114046 (Source: Pain Physician)

A 16-year-old adolescent with a history of minor abdominal trauma diagnosed with a giant isolated primary splenic hydatid cyst: a case report
CONCLUSION: in endemic areas, in patients with splenic cysts, hydatidosis should be contemplated.PMID:38576966 | PMC:PMC10990299 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001851 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Factors associated with increased length of stay in degenerative cervical spine surgery: a cohort analysis from the Canadian Spine Outcomes and Research Network
CONCLUSIONS: Patient and clinical factors predictive of prolonged LOS after ACDF and PCF are highly variable, warranting individual consideration for possible mitigation. Perioperative AEs remained a consistent independent predictor of prolonged LOS in both cohorts, highlighting the importance of preventing intra- and postoperative complications.PMID:38579341 | DOI:10.3171/2024.1.SPINE231211 (Source: Journal of Neurosurgery.Spine)

Using a LOng peripheral intraVEnous catheter with retractable guidewire to optimize first-insertion success for patients with Difficult IntraVenous Access in the emergency department (LOVE-DIVA): a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial
Br J Nurs. 2024 Apr 4;33(7):S28-S34. doi: 10.12968/bjon.2024.33.7.S28.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: First-insertion success rates for peripheral vascular access devices (PVADs) in patients with difficult venous access (DIVA) are low, which negatively affects staff workload, patient experience, and organizational cost. There is mixed evidence regarding the impact of a peripheral vascular access device with retractable coiled tip guidewire (GW; AccuCath™, BD) on the first-insertion success rate. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the use of long GW-PVADs, compared with standard PVADs, reduces the risk of first-time in...
