The Impact of Delirium on Recovery in Geriatric Rehabilitation After Acute Infection
Delirium is common during acute infection in older patients and is associated with functional decline. Geriatric rehabilitation (GR) can help older patients to return to their premorbid functional level. It is unknown whether delirium affects GR outcomes in patients with acute infection. We evaluated whether delirium affects trajectories of activities of daily living (ADL) and quality of life (QoL) recovery in GR after COVID-19 infection. Assessing the Variation and Drivers of Cost in 1-Level Lumbar Fusion: A Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing Analysis
As value-based health care arrangements gain traction in spine care, understanding the true cost of care becomes critical. Historically, inaccurate cost proxies have been used, including negotiated reimbursement rates or list prices. However, time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) allows for a more accurate cost assessment, including a better understanding of the primary drivers of cost in 1-level lumbar fusion. Continued decline in the incidence of myocardial infarction beyond the COVID-19 pandemic: a nationwide study of the Swedish population aged 60 and older during 2015 –2022
This study aims to shed light on the seemingly paradoxical relationship between COVID-19 and myocardial infarction occurrence on the population level by exploring long-term trends in incidence rates, case fatality, and proportion of patients dying before reaching a hospital. Our work is based on a linkage of administrative registers covering the entire population aged 60  + in Sweden. Considering both long-term trends since 2015 and seasonal variability, we compared observed incidence, case fatality, and proportions of patients hospitalized to expected values during 2020–2022. Despite more than 200 laboratory-confirm...

How well global dietary intake estimates agree: a case of sodium consumption
AbstractGlobal dietary data repositories are key components of nutrition surveillance. The two most comprehensive databases, the Global Dietary Database (GDD) and the Global Burden Disease (GBD), provide national dietary intake estimates but use different data sources and models to generate estimates. To explore the agreement between GDD and GBD estimates, we compared country-specific average daily sodium intakes in 169 countries over a 28-year period using descriptive statistics, the Bland –Altman method, and prevalence exceeding the intake reference level of 2.3 g/day. We detected a staggering 36% difference between G...

Rasch validation of the short form (8 item) PC-QoL questionnaire and applicability of use as a health state classification system for a new preference-based measure
This study included PC-QoL 8-item responses of 653 parents participating in a prospective cohort study about paediatric chronic cough. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and Rasch analysis were used to examine dimensionality and select potential items and level structure.ResultsEFA indicated that the PC-QoL had one underlying domain. Rasch analysis indicated threshold disordering in all items which improved when items were collapsed from seven to four levels. Two demonstrated differential item functioning (DIF) by diagnosis or ethnicity and were excluded from the final scale. This scale satisfied Rasch assumptions of local ...

Strategies for the delivery of sex-based equity in cardiovascular clinical trials
Nature Reviews Cardiology, Published online: 23 April 2024; doi:10.1038/s41569-024-01025-xThe under-representation of women in cardiovascular clinical trials persists across participant, clinician and research roles. This gap perpetuates health inequity and hampers the generation, translation and implementation of optimal evidence-based care. Urgent action is needed to address barriers, promote diversity, and ensure inclusive trial design and health-care delivery and dissemination, for more equitable cardiovascular health. Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 2672: DEMA: A Deep Learning-Enabled Model for Non-Invasive Human Vital Signs Monitoring Based on Optical Fiber Sensing
This study introduces a non-invasive surveillance system that employs an optical fiber sensor and advanced deep-learning methodologies for precise vital sign readings. This system integrates a monitor based on the MZI (Mach–Zehnder interferometer) with LSTM networks, surpassing conventional approaches and providing potential uses in medical diagnostics. This could be potentially utilized in non-invasive health surveillance, evaluation, and intelligent health care. (Source: Sensors)

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1906: Nature-Inspired Micro/Nano-Structured Antibacterial Surfaces
g He Li The problem of bacterial resistance has become more and more common with improvements in health care. Worryingly, the misuse of antibiotics leads to an increase in bacterial multidrug resistance and the development of new antibiotics has virtually stalled. These challenges have prompted the need to combat bacterial infections with the use of radically different approaches. Taking lessons from the exciting properties of micro-/nano-natural-patterned surfaces, which can destroy cellular integrity, the construction of artificial surfaces to mimic natural functions provides new opportunities for the innovation an...

Factors influencing the organisational homeostasis in  healthcare organisations
This study employed “TISM methodology” and “MICMAC analysis” to better comprehend how the components interact with one another and prioritise them based on their driving and dependence power. This study identified 10 factors of organisational homeostasis in healthcare organisation. Recognition of interdependence, hormesis, strategic coalignment, consciousness on dependence of healthcare resources and cybernetic principle of regulations are the driving or key factors of this study. The study's primary focus was on the organisational homeostasis factors in healthcare organisations. The methodological approach and struc...
